Davide Santon lamented a "bad day" at the Newcastle office on Sunday, as the Magpies fell to a 1-0 defeat at home against West Ham.
Former skipper Kevin Nolan scored the only goal of the game in the first half to inflict United's third Premier League defeat of the season.
The hosts improved as the match wore on but were unable to find a way past a stubborn Hammers rearguard and their impressive goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.
"We are not angry about the game, just disappointed," Santon told nufc.co.uk.
"In the first half we were not good and everything went for West Ham and not for us. We tried to come back into the game in the second half but ended up with nothing.
"We didn't keep the ball well enough and started the game a little bit sloppy.
"We only started playing when West Ham were winning and we should have been like that from the kick-off. It was a very bad day."
The Magpies' next fixture is on Saturday when they entertain Swansea City at St. James' Park.
And Santon is looking forward to plenty of graft on the training pitch this week in order to bounce back to winning ways.
"We have to now forget this game and spend the week thinking about Swansea and working hard for that so that we can put it right," he explained.
"That is a very important game for us as we have to win - it has been too long since we last got three points in the league. We have to get back to a winning mentality."
