Santon Hungry For More

Written by Newcastle Utd

Davide Santon's goal at Wigan was the first of his Newcastle career - but he hopes many more will follow

By Dan King - Newcastle United Club Reporter

Defender Davide Santon hopes his goal at Wigan will be the first of many in his Newcastle United career.

After 62 appearances without finding the net for the Magpies, the Italian raced onto Papiss Cisse's clever flick 72 minutes into the match at the DW Stadium, cut inside and rifled a shot past Latics keeper Joel Robles.

That made the score 1-1 and prompted a frenzied celebration from the 22-year-old, who had also never scored for previous club Inter Milan or during a loan spell at Cesena.

He had been denied by numerous fine saves and blocks in previous matches but played as a right-winger in the second half on Sunday, when Arouna Kone's late goal eventually gave the hosts the victory.

But Santon's strike was the big positive of a disappointing day and he told nufcTV: "It's the first goal in my career because in Italy as well, I never scored.

"Maybe it's because in the second half I played more high. I was a midfield player so I had a chance and I'm really happy with this goal but I'm disappointed because the team lost the game.

"The manager is a fantastic manager and he knows where I have to play. If he says to me I have to play left back, right back, I play where he says to me.  If he says to me play in midfield, I play in midfield.

"Of course I like going more forward than defending but if I play left back or right back I know my job is first to defend and after that, to go forward.

"I've been trying for a long time to score and the goalkeeper always makes an amazing save but finally I scored and I'm happy. I hope it's the first of a lot of goals in my career."
