Loic Remy could make his Newcastle debut from the bench when Fulham come to St. James' Park on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).
The French striker arrived from Queens Park Rangers on a season-long loan last month but was suffering from a calf injury which meant he only resumed full training recently.
But, although he's still not quite ready to play from the start, the 26-year-old is likely to be named among the substitutes against the Cottagers.
"He's trained," Alan Pardew confirmed this week. "He hasn't really done a pre-season but I think the option of him on the bench - maybe just for the real last period of the game - might be something I look at.
"It'd be nice to bring him off the bench. He's fit and well, there's no problem with him, it's just he can't really do a big portion of the game."
Another player in Pardew's plans for the weekend is Yohan Cabaye, who has yet to play for the Magpies this season following speculation around his future at the Club.
"What I have said to Yohan Cabaye is I expect him to play this weekend," the manager said. "Until another bid comes in from Arsenal that is accepted or not, that will be the situation."
The Capital One Cup win over Morecambe on Wednesday night gave the boss food for thought, with a couple of players in particular doing themselves no harm.
Pardew said: "I thought Sammy Ameobi had a mature performance and he's a player that is certainly knocking on the first team door.
"And (Paul) Dummett, we've kind of just resigned ourselves to the fact that we don't even worry about him any more. We can stick him in at any point and know we've got a player there so that's really good news for us.
"The guys that were used, who played a big part in terms of Mathieu Debuchy, didn't get injured. They're all fit and well so they're in good shape."
However, one player who won't feature is Cheick Tiote, who has missed the last two matches through injury.
"Cheick won't play in this game," revealed Pardew. "He's only just missing out and I think he'll miss the Ivory Coast games as well but when we get to Aston Villa there's a very, very good chance he'll be available."
