Alan Pardew believes Everton's "guile and experience" were the telling factors as United slipped to a 2-1 defeat on Wednesday night.
Despite Papiss Cisse heading the Magpies in front early on, goals either side of half-time from Leighton Baines and Victor Anichebe handed the visitors all three points at St. James' Park.
And while Newcastle boss Pardew was proud of his players' efforts, he was left frustrated as they fell just short yet again.
"I thought there was a difference between the two sides," Pardew told nufcTV.
"I thought they had a bit more guile and experience on the pitch and on the bench, and that proved costly in the end for us.
"You couldn't fault our commitment or effort in trying to cause them problems. Everton are a very good side and I look at my players and they have been honest.
"We were very unlucky to concede the first goal - it's never a foul in my opinion. That had happened ten or 15 times and nothing was given.
"But we still had moments. On 82 minutes Davide (Santon) is through on goal, only has to square it to Papiss and takes the wrong option. And that is what's costing us.
"Even with the lack of experience we had on the pitch we still gave a great account of ourselves and I'm proud of them. But we can't keep losing games like we are at the moment."
