By Dan King - Newcastle United Communications Officer

The draw for the second round of the Carling Cup will take place on Thursday, with Newcastle one of several top-flight sides entering the competition at this stage.

The Magpies are joined by Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Everton, Liverpool, Norwich City, Queens Park Rangers, Sunderland, Swansea City, West Bromwich Albion, Wigan Athletic and Wolverhampton Wanderers, as well as the first-round victors, in the second round draw.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Fulham, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Stoke City then come into the reckoning at the third round stage.

Alan Pardew will watch with interest as the draw takes place live on Sky Sports following the televised Sheffield Wednesday v Blackpool first-round tie, which kicks off at 7.45pm, and nufc.co.uk will bring you news of who Newcastle are paired against immediately after the draw.

Last term, Newcastle were handed a tough away trip to Accrington Stanley, but progressed with a 3-2 win to set up a memorable tie with Chelsea, when United won 4-3 thanks to Shola Ameobi's last-minute header.

But eventual finalists Arsenal ended The Magpies' interest in the competition at the fourth round stage.
