Alan Pardew was left to reflect on a day where "nothing went right" as Newcastle lost 3-0 to local rivals Sunderland.
Black Cats goalkeeper Simon Mignolet was inspired during a first half where United were on top but Paolo Di Canio's side led through Stephane Sessegnon's long-range strike.
Then the Belgian was finally beaten by Papiss Cisse in the second half - but Darren Cann raised his flag for offside to cut short the Magpies' celebrations.
An injury to Tim Krul which is set to sideline him for the rest of the season was followed by two more spectacular strikes from Adam Johnson and David Vaughan as the Wearsiders won at St. James' Park for the first time in 13 years,
Speaking to nufcTV, Pardew said: "It's an ugly day for us. We played like a team that looked tired mentally and physically against a fresh team.
"Nothing went right for us today - nothing.
"First half, we were disheveled and not really great, and they nicked the goal that we should have done better on. Second half we came out and looked okay, and we had a great opportunity for the equaliser which should have been given, and really I have to say that's a massive turning point.
"You get 1-1 there, we get a lift - we get an energy lift as much as anything and a mental lift that we can go on and win the game.
"But that got taken away, they slowed the game down with all the tricks in the book and then smashed a second in.
"We lose Tim to a dislocated shoulder - you can rattle them all off. It was one of those days and I don't want to have too many of them again."
