Opening Day Omen For United

Newcastle have only entertained Southampton on the opening day of the season once before - and ran out 3-0 winners at St. James' Park.

The Saints will travel to Gallowgate for United's first match of the 2015/16 Barclays Premier League season on Saturday, 8th August for what will be Steve McClaren's first game as the Magpies' head coach.

Ronald Koeman's side won 2-1 in the same fixture last term, but when the teams met on Tyneside in the old Division One on Saturday, 19th August 1967, Newcastle cruised to victory.

Scotland international Jimmy Gabriel made his Saints debut after joining from Everton, while the likes of Martin Chivers, Ron Davies and Terry Paine were also in the Southampton line-up.

But it was Newcastle new boy Jimmy Scott who stole the show as he scored on his debut in front of a crowd of 33,709.

Albert Bennett and Tommy Robson were also on target for Joe Harvey's side.

The Newcastle line-up that day was: Gordon Marshall, Ollie Burton, Frank Clark, John McGrath, Jim Iley (sub Bryan Robson), Jim Scott, Albert Bennett, Wyn Davies, Dave Hilley, Tommy Robson.
