By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Club Reporter

Teenage full-back Alex Nicholson won his second Wales Under 19 cap on Wednesday night, but could not prevent them from slipping to a 3-1 defeat against Sweden.

In the European Under 19 Championship qualifier - played in Slovenia - Newcastle youngster Nicholson played the full 90 minutes at right-back for the Welsh, who took an 11th-minute lead through Thomas Lawrence's penalty.

However, Johan Hammar, Muamer Tankovic and David Moberg-Karlsson all struck for the Swedes to claim victory in Bakovci.

Nicholson, who has been with the Magpies since the age of 13, has also represented his country at under 16 and under 17 level and made his under 19 debut last month against Germany.

The Academy graduate was born in Newcastle but qualifies for Wales through his grandfather.

Nicholson will be hoping for more game time as Wales face Slovenia and Russia on Friday and Monday respectively.
