Newcastle v Man City: Key Moments

Written by Newcastle Utd

The key moments from Newcastle United's Barclays Premier League defeat to Manchester City at St. James' Park

By Dan King - Newcastle United Digital Editor

At St. James' Park

Newcastle United 0
Manchester City 2 (Dzeko 8, Negredo 90+4)

WHISTLE-MDC-icons90+7mins: It's full time and Manchester City have claimed all three points but the scoreline does not even begin to tell the full story. Click here for the report.

GOAL-MDC-icons90+4mins - MANCHESTER CITY GOAL (0-2): With Newcastle throwing bodies forward, City wrap up the game as Milner finds Negredo running through. Krul denies him with a sprawling save but the ball runs kindly for the striker to tap home the rebound.

90+2mins: What a block from Kolarov. Taylor was steaming in at the far post to surely equalise but the defender made a wonderful interception.

90mins: From Cabaye's corner, Remy's looping header drifts agonisingly wide. There will be seven minutes of stoppage time.

89mins: Brilliant control from Silva allows him to square for Negredo but his shot is stopped on the line by Taylor.

88mins: Ben Arfa embarks upon a direct run but his low shot from just outside the box is too close to Hart.

87mins: From a pinpoint Navas cross, Fernandinho's header hits the top of the crossbar.

SUB-MDC-icons82mins: A double substitution for United: Yoan Gouffran and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa make way for Hatem Ben Arfa and Massadio Haidara.

SUB-MDC-icons79mins: Nasri is carried off and former Newcastle man James Milner will replace him.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons75mins: Yanga-Mbiwa is booked for a poor tackle on compatriot Nasri just inside the City half. The City midfielder looks to be in a bad way, with a stretcher called.

SUB-MDC-icons73mins: Anita and Sissoko do well to work an opening for Santon but the full-back fires over. Then Papiss Cisse comes on for Anita, who has been excellent in the second half.

72mins: Kolarov finds Nasri but the ex-Arsenal man's first-time shot is straight at Krul, who gathers with ease.

70mins: Gouffran plays a lovely one-two with Cabaye, then floats a great ball to Remy who takes the ball down on his chest inside the box but sees his shot blocked by the legs of Hart - that was a great chance.

68mins: Tiote rolls the ball to Cabaye 30 yards from goal and the midfielder hits a dipping strike which drops just over the bar with Hart backpedalling.

SUB-MDC-icons61mins: Toure comes off for Javi Garcia just before Hart punches away a Cabaye free-kick and Tiote blazes wide.

59mins: Cabyaye's free-kick is half cleared but Tiote gives it back to the Frenchman and he hits a low drive which Hart dives full length to push around the post.

55mins: Krul makes a stunning save from point-blank range to deny Negredo. Silva fizzed the ball in and the striker seemed certain to score but Krul somehow kept it out.

54mins: Negredo shoots on the turn from eight yards out but he's leaning back and can't keep it down.

SUB-MDC-icons52mins: Manuel Pellegrini makes his first change as Jesus Navas replaces goalscorer Dzeko.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons49mins: Tiote is booked for clipping the heels of fellow Ivorian Yaya Toure.

48mins: Fernandinho fails to clear the ball and Vurnon Anita gets in a low shot from 20 yards but Hart is down well to save.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons46mins: Newcastle get the second half started, attacking towards the Gallowgate end.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons45+2mins: Manchester City are ahead at the break but Newcastle will wonder why Tiote's stunning 34th minute 'goal' was disallowed for an apparent offside. It's still all to play for in the second half. Click here for a first half report.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons45mins: Another yellow card, this time for Zabaleta, who brings Sissoko down as the Frenchman sprinted forwards. There will be two minutes of stoppage time.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons40mins: Fernandinho is shown a yellow card for a chop on Taylor, who was bringing the ball out of defence.

38mins: Cabaye sends in another decent free-kick and as Williamson goes for it, he seems to be nudged in the back by Negredo but Jones doesn't spot it.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons37mins: Sissoko is booked for kicking the ball away.

36mins: Among the confusion, City win a free kick and from Samir Nasri's delivery, Silva shoots just wide.

34mins: Newcastle think they've equalised - but Tiote's stunner is controversially chalked off. Cabaye's flag kick was half cleared as far as the Ivorian whose strike was destined for the back of the net from the moment it left his boot. He then raced over to the dugout to celebrate with John Carver as the stadium erupted - but suddenly Mike Jones was surrounded by Manchester City players and after some deliberation, gave an offside decision. The home supporters can't believe it and neither can Alan Pardew.

33mins: Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa swings in a fine cross which Pablo Zabaleta tries to head away from danger but instead can only divert into the path of Cabaye, whose stinging shot from a tight angle is superbly tipped behind by Joe Hart.

32mins: Cabaye's corner from the left finds Taylor racing in and the defender, under pressure from Negredo, stabs narrowly wide.

28mins: Dzeko chests the ball into the path of Negredo but his long-range half volley flies into the Gallowgate.

23mins: Cabaye wins possession in midfield and slides the ball through for Remy, who races in on goal but is flagged offside as he goes to shoot.

18mins: Tim Krul pumps a free kick towards Mike Williamson, who nods the ball down for Taylor. He's forced away from goal but delivers a decent cross which causes panic in the City defence before they're finally able to clear their lines.

15mins: Negredo's powerful looping header hits the top of the net after Silva picked the frontman out from a short corner. It all stemmed from a controverisally-awarded free-kick awarded as Steven Taylor appeared to win the ball from Dzeko; Sissoko headed that behind for a flag kick which City came close to scoring from.

11mins: A Newcastle move breaks down and City, as they do so well, break quickly and Kolarov goes for goal from 30 yards but it whistles just wide with Alvaro Negredo almost getting a touch to force home.

GOAL-MDC-icons8mins - MANCHESTER CITY GOAL (0-1): City score from their first genuine attack of the game. They move the ball out to Aleksandar Kolarov on the left and he cuts the ball back for Edin Dzeko, who makes no mistake from six yards out. Until then, Newcastle would have been happy with their start but now they're trailing.

4mins: An intelligent headed flick from Loic Remy sends Moussa Sissoko charging down the right and although his initial pass towards Yohan Cabaye is cut out, the ball comes back to Sissoko who hammers a shot wide.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons1min: Manchester City take kick-off with Newcastle facing towards the Leazes end in the first half after stand-in skipper Cheick Tiote wins the toss. City are wearing sky blue shirts with white shorts and socks; Newcastle, of course, are in black and white.
