Newcastle v Leeds: Key Moments

Written by Newcastle Utd

All the action from Wednesday night's Capital One Cup third round win over Leeds United

By Dan King - Newcastle United Digital Editor

Newcastle United 2 (Cisse 31, Gouffran 67)
Leeds United 0

SECOND HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons90+3mins: The Magpies have progressed to the fourth round of the Capital One Cup thanks to goals in each half from Papiss Cisse and Yoan Gouffran. Alan Pardew named a strong side and it paid off at St. James' Park against a spirited Leeds outfit. Click here for the match report.

90+2mins: Obertan's pace is again used to good effect as Gosling releases him but again Kenny denies the Frenchman.

90mins: Fourth official Paul Tierney signals that there will be a minimum of three minutes of stoppage time.

SUB-MDC-icons84mins: The excellent Gouffran is given a well-earned rest as Haris Vuckic comes on for the final six minutes.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons83mins: Gosling is caught late by Alex Mowatt. The Leeds man is a shade lucky to escape with a yellow card and Gosling is fortunate not to be seriously hurt.

SUB-MDC-icons80mins: After Tiote sends a long-range strike wide, Alan Pardew makes his second change with Dan Gosling coming on for Vurnon Anita.

79mins: Obertan races in on goal after Gouffran pounced on a loose Leeds pass but, after taking his time and shooting from ten yards, his effort hits the trailing leg of Kenny.

74mins: Marveaux plays a lovely ball with the outside of his boot for Obertan to race onto from his own half. The Frenchman advances before finding Dummett racing forward in support and the young left-back drills a dangerous low cross along the six yard box, but nobody can force it home.

SUB-MDC-icons72mins: With a confidence-boosting goal to his name, Papiss Cisse comes off to be replaced by Gabriel Obertan. It's his first appearance of the season.

69mins: Leeds, to their credit, rarely lie down for anybody and Stephen Warnock almost pulls one back with a great run from the Leeds left and then a low shot which Krul manages to grab at the second attempt.

GOAL-MDC-icons67mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (2-0): Gouffran has his first St. James' Park goal for Newcastle United with a fine finish, with Sammy Ameobi again involved. The England under-21 winger rolled the ball up to the Frenchman's feet and, just inside the box, he turned his man and placed an arcing effort beyond Kenny. That should be enough to guarantee United's place in the fourth round.

SUB-MDC-icons64mins: Diouf is on in place of Michael Tonge while Dominic Poleon is replaced by Aidan White in a double substitution for Leeds.

60mins: Smith's aerial prowess is causing problems for United and Sam Byran's chipped cross finds the striker, who sends a free header wide.

58mins: Marveaux carries the ball for some distance before letting fly from almost 30 yards out but his strike swerves well off target and the second half has yet to really get going. However, former Liverpool star El-Hadji Diouf is warming up for the visitors and he's always liable to be involved in something.

55mins: Smith gets his head to a cross from the right but sends his effort too close to Krul, who gathers with ease.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons46mins: Newcastle get the second period underway with no changes for either side. Today's attendance is 36,220 with 5,971 here to support Leeds.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons45+1min: The Magpies lead at the break and have shaded it, but Leeds did hit the woodwork early on through McCormack. However, Papiss Cisse's header is the difference so far. Click here for the half time report.

45mins: There will be just one minute added on at the end of the half.

43mins: Another good delivery from Ameobi goes all the way to Debuchy at the far post and his header back across goal isn't too far away. United have been strong on their left hand side tonight, with Ameobi at the heart of a lot of good work going forward.

40mins: With options, including the giant Smith, in the box, McCormack opts to shoot from out on the left wing and looks disappointed with himself as the ball sails into the Gallowgate.

34mins: After Debuchy appears to be fouled by Smith as he goes to clear a cross, the ball falls for McCormack who flashes a drive just across goal with Krul at full stretch.

GOAL-MDC-icons31mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-0): Just as he did last season, Papiss Cisse breaks his duck for the campaign in the Capital One Cup. Dummett's ball down the line was sent accurately into the box by Ameobi and Cisse had the simple task of heading beyond Kenny from eight yards. He did so emphatically and the Leeds fans are, for now at least, stunned into silence.

28mins: McCormack gets past Debuchy on the flank and crosses for Matt Smith, the ex-Oldham striker, whose header is well parried by Tim Krul after the ball took a nick off Coloccini.

26mins: Gouffran floats the ball over from the right and Cisse controls it well at the back stick but can only smash into the side-netting from a narrow angle.

24mins: Cheick Tiote breaks up play with a determined header, then overlaps Coloccini on the left to cut into the box and unleash a low shot which is blocked at the near post.

21mins: Sammy Ameobi works space with some neat footwork on the left and whips over a decent cross which Gouffran dives to meet but can only glance wide. It was a brave header but off target.

14mins: After Paul Dummett does well to win a corner, Sylvain Marveaux's left-wing delivery is met powerfully by the head of Fabricio Coloccini but cleared off the line.

11mins: 'Oh Gary, Gary, Gary, Gary, Gary, Gary, Gary Speed' rings out around the stadium from both sets of supporters as they remember a former Newcastle and Leeds hero. These two teams may not always get on but they are united in their respect and love for the Welshman.

10mins: Debuchy delivers a lovely cross from the right which Papiss Cisse goes to volley, but miskicks, then takes another swing but again scuffs his effort. Leeds partially clear their lines but Yoan Gouffran then races in on goal but sees Paddy Kenny block his shot and the flag was up anyway.

5mins: Ross McCormack makes a direct burst through the middle before going for a delicate chip from 20 yards which crashes back off the woodwork with Tim Krul beaten before Mathieu Debuchy's acrobatic overhead kick clears the danger. What a great effort from the Leeds man - he was so unlucky.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons1min: While Liverpool and Manchester United will gain most of the headlines, another old-fashioned football rivalry is resumed tonight as Newcastle host Leeds United. The Yorkshiremen are in an all-gold away kit while the Magpies are in black and white and it's the visitors who take kick-off, attacking towards the Gallowgate. Up on level seven, they're backed by a huge away support - one of the biggest travelling contingents to descend upon St. James' Park in several years - and with the home fans also in good voice there's a tremendous atmosphere already.
