Newcastle v Everton: Key Moments

Written by Newcastle Utd

Live text commentary from Wednesday night's Barclays Premier League meeting between Newcastle and Everton at St. James' Park

By Dan King - Newcastle United Club Reporter

Newcastle United 1 (Cisse 2)
Everton 2 (Baines 43, Anichebe 60)

SECOND HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons 90+6mins: Full-time - Newcastle have lost their third game in a row. It looked like a different story when Papiss Cisse headed them in front after just two minutes but Leighton Baines' free-kick just before half-time and then Victor Anichebe's goal on the hour won the game for the Toffees.

90+4mins: Baines motors down the left and into the box but is denied by Krul to keep Newcastle in it as we approach the final few seconds.

90mins: Some hope for Newcastle - there will be a minimum of six minutes of stoppage time.

SUB-MDC-icons 88mins: Jelavic comes off for Bryan Ovideo, with the Croat taking his time to leave the field.

SUB-MDC-icons 87mins: After Santon sends a weak 20-yard strike straight down Howard's throat, Newcastle bring on Nile Ranger in place of James Perch.

83mins: Sammy Ameobi's run ends up with the ball squirting its way to Santon on the left and he cuts in and shoots, wth Howard beating his shot away at the near post. From the corner, the ball is only half-cleared and Marveaux shoots but his effort is blocked by a brave blue shirt.

SUB-MDC-iconsYellow-Card-MDC-icons 80mins: Sammy Ameobi is on for Cheick Tiote as Pienaar is booked for throwing the ball away to delay a Magpies throw-in.

76mins: Fellaini wins the ball in midfield and advances towards goal before seeing his progress ended by Bigirimana, who seemed to win the ball but referee Atkinson deems it a foul. Baines takes the free-kick but it goes wide of Krul's far post.

72mins: Williamson takes a wild swing at Baines' low cross and is relieved to see Krul tip the ball over the bar as it threatens to loop into the net.

70mins: Ameobi makes room for a shot 25 yards out but is off balance as he hits it and it swerves well wide of the target.

69mins: Anita crosses from the right and Cisse dives to get in a header, which may have been going wide but is blocked by Heitinga - possibly with his arm although it looked more like his chest.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons 68mins: Cheick Tiote gives the ball away and then in his efforts to win it back, clatters Jagielka to pick up a yellow card and concede a free-kick, which Baines whips in but the Ivorian heads away.

SUB-MDC-icons 65mins: Obertan tricks his way into the box and sees his shot parried behind by Howard. It's his last action as he is replaced by Gael Bigirimana.

GOAL-MDC-icons 60mins - EVERTON GOAL (1-2): With his first touch, Anichebe puts Everton in front. Jelavic makes progress down the left and crosses low for the Nigerian, who slides in to score from close range.

SUB-MDC-icons 58mins: After a superb dinked pass from Marveaux is dinked agonisingly wide by Ameobi, Everton make their first change with Victor Anichebe replacing Naismith.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons 53mins: An awful touch from Williamson allows Nikica Jelavic to steal the ball and get the wrong side of him, leading the defender to upend the Croatian striker. It earns him a booking but he makes amends by heading Baines' free-kick away.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons 47mins: Ameobi is fouled a few yards outside the box by Heitigina after rolling the Dutchman, who is booked. Alas, Marveaux's free-kick hits the wall.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons 46mins: Both sides are unchanged as Everton kick the second half off, attacking towards the Gallowgate end.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons 45+1mins: It's half-time and Leighton Baines' superb free-kick two minutes before the interval means it's honours even at the moment. Papiss Cisse had put United ahead with just over a minute played and Newcastle have had two penalty appeals turned down and hit the woodwork through James Perch, but Tim Krul has also made three good saves so it's probably a fair reflection of the game - although the home fans aren't too happy with Martin Atkinson as the officials head down the tunnel. Click here for the half-time report.

45mins: There will be one minute of stopagge time at the end of the half.

GOAL-MDC-icons 43mins - EVERTON GOAL (1-1): I said earlier that Leighton Baines is one of the best set-piece takers in the league - he's just shown that again with a wonderful free-kick from fully 30 yards which has flown past Krul and levelled the scores. Fellaini had won the free-kick and the England international left-back stepped up to send his shot flying into the Leazes net.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons 41mins: Cisse is booked for a late tackle on Baines near the left-hand touchline, but Ameobi heads the full-back's free-kick away from goal as United clear their lines impressively.

40mins: More great wingplay from Santon results in the left-back sending over a low cross which Ameobi reaches just ahead of Phil Neville, who then seems to bring the Magpies man down in the box but referee Atkinson waves them away.

35mins: Marveaux taps the ball to Santon on the left and the Italian, celebrating his 22nd birthday, leaves Naismith on the ground before fizzing in a low cross which Anita just fails to reach inside the box.

32mins: Baines slides a great ball in for Pienaar to sprint onto, nipping in front of his old Ajax team-mate Anita to go one-on-one with Krul, but the keeper makes another massive save as he stays big to block with his legs. How important could that prove to be?

30mins: After Santon is fouled on the left by Naismith, Vurnon Anita sends over a delicious free-kick which James Perch meets but his header crashes back off the woodwork. It was nearly 2-0 to Newcastle, who had seen muted appeals for a penalty turned down by referee Martin Atkinson a couple of minutes earlier after Gabriel Obertan seemed to be tugged by Phil Jagielka but tried to stay on his feet rather than take a tumble.

24mins: Everton are really starting to mount some pressure and as a high hall is taken down expertly by the giant Marouane Fellaini eight yards out, it takes a brilliant block from Davide Santon to stop what looked a certain goal. United need to withstand these waves of Toffees attacks.

23mins: Mike Williamson concedes a free-kick 35 yards out and Baines curls in a typically dangerous delivery which is met at the far post by Steven Naismith but it's saved relatively easily by Krul.

15mins: Leon Osman plays a great ball to Baines on the left and he taps the ball back to Steven Pienaar. The South African goes for goal from 20 yards but his curling shot is easily gathered by Krul, who got his body right behind it to clutch the ball into his chest.

10mins: Howard has to be alert to push a misdirected header from John Heitinga behind - the Dutch defender scored an own goal for Newcastle at Goodison Park in this fixture last season and almost had another there.

6mins: Cheick Tiote is harsly penalised for a foul 25 yards from goal, in a central area, and Leighton Baines has the chance to shoot from the free-kick. He's one of the best set-piece takers around and his effort is creeping in but Krul flies across his goal to his left and pushes it around the post - a great save from the Dutchman. Then as the corner is only half-cleared, Krul smothers at the feet of Baines to deny him for a second time in the space of a few moments. Not only has he provided an assist - the first Barclays Premier League keeper to do so this season - but he's made two vital stops.

4mins: Ameobi beats the offside trap on the left-hand side and flashes a low cross just across goal with Cisse narrowly missing out on getting the touch which would surely have given him his second of the night.

GOAL-MDC-icons 2mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-0): This time Cisse's header does beat Howard to put United ahead. Tim Krul's long ball bounces over everybody's head, including the entire Everton defence, but Cisse reads it perfectly and sends a looping header over the keeper and into the back of the net. What a start for the Magpies and what a start to 2013 for Cisse, who has a lot of responsibility on his shoulders with Demba Ba left out of tonight's squad after being granted permission to speak to Chelsea over a move to Stamford Bridge. The whole team ran over to celebrate with him.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons 1min: With France international Mathieu Debuchy watching the match with his international colleague and close friend Yohan Cabaye, we're underway at St. James' Park. With both sides in their home kits, it's Newcastle who get us started by kicking towards the Gallowgate end in this first half. Papiss Cisse gets an early header in after Shola Ameobi's flick but it's straight at Tim Howard and was never going to beat the Toffees keeper.
