Newcastle v Everton: Key Moments

Written by Newcastle Utd

The main moments from St. James' Park, where Newcastle were beaten by Roberto Martinez's Everton on Tuesday night

By Dan King - Newcastle United Digital Editor
At St. James' Park

Newcastle United 0
Everton 3 (Barkley 22, Lukaku 53, Osman 87)

SECOND HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons90+3mins: Everton run out deserved winners at St. James' Park, although the scoreline is perhaps harsh on Newcastle. Barkley's first-half goal was added to by strikes from Lukaku and Osman in what was an impressive display from the visitors, but United had chances of their own and had they taken a couple it could have been a different game. Click here for a match report.

SUB-MDC-icons90+1mins: Shola Ameobi is on for Yoan Gouffran.

90mins: Deuofeu, who switched to the left-hand side a while back, uses his pace again to leave Williamson behind and cuts the ball back, but nobody can force it home. There will be a minimum of three minutes added on.

GOAL-MDC-icons87mins - EVERTON GOAL (0-3): Toffees skipper Osman makes it three with a breakaway goal. Coloccini's pass from defence is cut out and Naismith finds Deuofeu. He tees up Lukaku, who unselfishly plays in Osman to rattle past Krul, who has had no chance with any of the goals tonight.

SUB-MDC-icons82mins: Roberto Martinez makes his first change as Barkley makes way for Steven Naismith.

81mins: More good play from Ben Arfa sees him wriggle past a challenge and feed Anita on the right, and the Dutchman's cross is headed goalwards by Cisse only for Howard to fly across his goal and parry.

78mins: Oh no - what a miss from Anita. Ben Arfa shows superb skill to dribble past three men on the left and into the box before drilling the ball across goal where Anita has an open goal but he somehow puts it wide. He was sliding in and perhaps that goes some way towards explaining it, but it was still a gilt-edged opportunity to pull one back.

SUB-MDC-icons75mins: Sylvain Marveaux is on for Yanga-Mbiwa, with Anita seemingly dropping in to play as an attack-minded right-back and Marveaux slotting into midfield.

74mins: United surrender possession in midfield again and Barkley wastes no time in finding Lukaku, whose gets in a rising effort which Krul pushes away.

67mins: Tiote's up-and-under is headed half clear by Barry, under pressure from Gouffran, and Cisse's follow up is deflected wide. Dummett takes the corner and picks out Fabricio Coloccini but the skipper heads over the bar.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons64mins: The first yellow card of the game is shown to Barry for pulling Gouffran back as the Frenchman sprinted forwards.

61mins: Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa makes a superb challenge on Lukaku and Tiote plays in Anita on the right; his cross drops for Gouffran to strike on the volley at the far post but his blistering drive flashes narrowly off target. It was a great effort though.

SUB-MDC-icons59mins: Just like on Saturday, Hatem Ben Arfa is introduced in place of De Jong - can he make a similar impact this time?

57mins: Tiote steams into a challenge to win the ball from Osman in midfield and then absolutely leathers it towards goal but it's close enough to Howard for the keeper to push it behind - either side of him and he would have got nowhere near it.

GOAL-MDC-icons53mins - EVERTON GOAL (0-2): Having been denied by Krul moments earlier, Deulofeu turns provider as he streaks down the right and cuts the ball back for Lukaku to slide home from eight yards out. Now the Magpies have a real mountain to climb.

52mins: Deulofeu works a yard of space on the right and gets in a low shot which Krul blocks with his leg.

47mins: Sissoko delivers from the right and Cisse goes for an overhead kick. He doesn't quite connect but the ball drops for Gouffran, whose first time effort goes over the bar.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons46mins: Everton get the second half started. Today's attendance is 47,266 incuding 1,850 travelling Toffees.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons45+1mins: Everton lead at half time through Barkley's solo effort but there hasn't been much between the two sides. Some of Newcastle's passing has been sloppy but they've had two penalty appeals rejected and will still feel that they're very much in this game. Click here for a first half report.

45mins: The pacy Gerard Deulofeu has been quiet so far but explodes into life with a quick change of direction and shot which flashes just across goal. There will be a minimum of one minute of stoppage time.

41mins: Another penalty appeal for United as Cisse challenges for the ball in the box following Sissoko's cross but appears to be shoved in the back by Baines, but again Mason isn't interested. Everton then mount a decent counter-attack but fortunately for Newcastle - and perhaps for Mason - it is snuffed out.

39mins: Anita releases Gouffran, who rolls to the ball to Tiote and the Ivorian's well-struck effort might have been flying in had an Everton defender not got his head in the way. What a way that would have been to mark his 100th appearance.

38mins: Sissoko squeezes in a low cross from the right and Williamson, still lurking from an earlier corner, manages to connect but can't get a strong enough contact to seriously trouble Tim Howard, who falls to his right to hold.

33mins: Almost a wonderful team goal from the Magpies as Sissoko plays the ball to Anita, who works a great one-two with De Jong to set up Cisse but as the striker lines up his shot, Everton's defenders swarm around him to block.

30mins: Slick play from the Toffees sees Barkley play the ball to Lukaku, whose first time lay-off sets Osman away but Williamson slides in with a great challenge.

27mins: De Jong tries to trick his way past former Newcastle defender Sylvain Distin but goes down in the box - referee Lee Mason waves away half-hearted penalty appeals though.

24mins: Vurnon Anita rolls the ball to Dummett 25 yards from goal and the left-back tries his luck but he's closed down quickly and fires into the Leazes end.

GOAL-MDC-icons22mins - EVERTON GOAL (0-1): The resulting corner is hacked away and Barkley gives chase. He reaches the ball first and then dances into the box, leaving a couple of defenders trailing in his wake, before smashing high into the roof of the net. It's a great goal from a great young talent and the Toffees lead.

21mins: Play races from one end to another as Gareth Barry goes down under Cheick Tiote's challenge to win a free kick, which is taken by Leighton Baines but headed away by Mike Williamson. Moussa Sissoko latches onto it and slices the defence open to play in Papiss Cisse but, from a narrow angle, the striker's shot is deflected behind.

18mins: Great save Tim Krul - Ross Barkley cuts inside and slides a cute ball into the feet of Romelu Lukaku who spins inside the box and shoots only for the Dutch goalkeeper to get his trailing leg in the way and keep the ball out.

14mins: After an electric opening couple of minutes, the game has quietened down but Newcastle are playing some good stuff and John Carver will be pleased with what he's seeing from the Magpies.

2mins: Seamus Coleman makes an important block to deflect a Luuk de Jong shot behind then, from Paul Dummett's left wing corner, Papiss Cisse's effort is blocked on the line by Leon Osman. United keep the pressure on and Yoan Gouffran is presented with a great chance inside the box but totally misses the ball as he takes a swing.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons1min: Newcastle get us underway on this chilly Tuesday evening and will kick towards the Leazes end in the first half. United are, of course, in black and white while Everton are wearing blue shirts with white shorts and socks.
