Newcastle v Cardiff: Key Moments

Written by Newcastle Utd

The big incidents from St. James' Park as Newcastle were knocked out of the FA Cup by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Cardiff City

By Dan King - Newcastle United Digital Editor

At St. James' Park

Newcastle United 1 (Cisse 61)
Cardiff City 2 (Noone 73, Campbell 80)

SECOND HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons90+5mins: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's reign at Cardiff City is off to a winning start as Newcastle's FA Cup dreams die for another year. Papiss Cisse gave United a second-half lead but Craig Noone's stunning equaliser was followed by a late Fraizer Campbell header to send the Welsh outfit through. Click here for a report.

90+4mins: Elliot comes up as Obertan forces a late corner but Santon's delivery is easily claimed by Marshall.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons90+3mins: Tiote plays a good ball out to Ben Arfa on the left and the Frenchman races past two players to reach the byline before going down easily under a challenge and he's promptly booked for diving.

90mins: There will a minimum of five minutes added on.

87mins: Anita is fouled 30 yards from goal and Taylor makes a nuisance of himself in front of the goalkeeper, but Ben Arfa's dipping free kick doesn't come down in time and skims over the bar.

SUB-MDC-icons85mins: Goalscorer Cisse is replaced by Ameobi while Sissoko makes way for Remy as United seach for a goal to keep them in the FA Cup.

84mins: Obertan races onto Tiote's pass into space and drives a low cross into the box but Cisse just can't get a vital touch. Loic Remy and Shola Ameobi are both waiting to come on.

GOAL-MDC-icons80mins - CARDIFF CITY GOAL (1-2): From the flag-kick, taken by Whittingham, Campbell sneaks in at the far post to head Cardiff in front. Suddenly, with ten minutes left, Newcastle are staring at a third round exit and to go out to a goal like that would be very disappointing indeed.

SUB-MDC-icons79mins: Cardiff make their third substitution as the lively Kim is replaced by Tommy Smith as the visitors prepare to take a corner.

GOAL-MDC-icons73mins - CARDIFF CITY GOAL (1-1): What an impact from Noone! Second after jogging onto the pitch, he sends a magnificent 25-yard strike flying into the top corner, with Elliot helpless.

SUB-MDC-icons72mins: Cardiff are awarded another free-kick right on the edge of the area but Whittingham's curler drops over the bar before the Bluebirds introduce Craig Noone for Odemwingie.

70mins: The resulting free-kick bobbles around in the United area before dropping for Campbell, whose low shot hits the same bit of the woodwork which Ben Arfa struck in the first half and Odemwingie fires over from the rebound.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons69mins: Steven Taylor is booked for the crime of winning the ball as Peter Odemwingie tried to nick it past him. It didn't even look like a free-kick, let alone a yellow card.

66mins: Campbell heads narrowly wide as Cardiff attack down the right. Elliot moved quickly across his line and may well have had it covered, but it was off target anyway.

SUB-MDC-icons63mins: Gabriel Obertan is on for Yoan Gouffran in a straight swap for United.

GOAL-MDC-icons61mins - NEWCASTLE UNITED GOAL (1-0): After Sissoko and then Cisse are denied by good tackles in the box following a slick Magpies move, the ball runs kindly for the latter to stroke the ball home from close range for his third goal of the campaign.

SUB-MDC-icons60mins: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer makes his first substitution as Cardiff manager, replacing Andreas Cornelius with former Sunderland striker Fraizer Campbell.

52mins: Another Haidara corner proves problematic for Cardiff as they fail to clear and Sissoko gets in a looping header which Marshall has to push behind as it threatens to creep over the line.

51mins: Santon floats the ball down the line and Papiss Cisse holds it up superbly before nudging into the path of Ben Arfa, who streaks into the box and brings a fine save from Marshall, who is able to tip the ball behind - just.

48mins: Ben Arfa takes Gouffran's pass and works room with some typically clever footwork but his shot fails to match the approach work as it soars well over the bar.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons46mins: There are no changes for either side as Newcastle get the second half underway, kicking towards the Gallowgate end.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons45+1mins: A piledriver from Gunnarsson forces a good save from Elliot and Haidara clears Whittingham's corner before a low-key first half comes to an end. Click here for a report.

45mins: There will be just one minute of stoppage time.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons42mins: Aron Gunnarsson becomes the first player to be booked for a foul on Ben Arfa.

31mins: More good play from Haidara wins a corner which the full-back takes himself and although Cardiff momentarily clear their lines, Yoan Gouffran is waiting to unleash a stinging volley which flies wide.

25mins: Ben Arfa demands the ball from Anita 40 yards from goal and glides into a shooting position before hammering a low shot from 22 yards which hits the inside of a post - that was very nearly the opening goal.

19mins: Hatem Ben Arfa receives the ball from Santon, goes to shoot and then moves the ball a few yards further forward before going for goal with a dipping low strike which flashes wide.

18mins: Whittingham drives over a decent delivery which Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa does well to head away from goal but it drops to Cowie, whose blistering effort arrows narrowly over.

17mins: A great left-wing cross from Massadio Haidara is headed away but only as far as Vurnon Anita, whose half-volley is on target but fielded without too much fuss by David Marshall, the City keeper.

12mins: Now Bo-Kyung tries his luck from 20 yards but like every other shot so far, it's off target.

11mins: Silver-haired Cardiff defender Kevin McNaughton advances towards the box before sending a 25 yard strike narrowly over the bar and the visitors have started well.

9mins: A dangerous corner from Peter Whittingham is headed home by Mark Hudson, the Bluebirds skipper, but referee Anthony Taylor spotted a foul on Elliot and the cheers from the Cardiff fans in the north-east corner are short-lived.

7mins: After Moussa Sissoko loses out near his own corner flag, Kim Bo-Kyung is able to get in a cross from the left and Don Cowie gets a slight touch to it with his head, but it lacks the power or direction to seriously test Rob Elliot, who kept a clean sheet in his only previous appearance of the season against Morecambe.

4mins: Davide Santon has the first shot of the game as he cuts inside from the right and lets fly but it's some way off target.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons1min: Cardiff, in their controversial red shirts with white shorts and white socks, take kick-off with Newcastle kicking towards the Leazes end in this first half. Alan Pardew has made seven changes to his starting XI but it's still a strong Magpies line-up featuring seven full internationals.
