Metalist v Newcastle: Key Moments

Written by Newcastle Utd

The action as it happened from the Ukraine, where Newcastle won 1-0 to reach the Europa League round of 16

By Dan King - Newcastle United Club Reporter

Metalist Kharkiv 0
Newcastle United 1 (Ameobi pen 63)

SECOND HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons90+5mins: Full-time - Newcastle only needed a score draw tonight but they have won 1-0 in the Ukraine and became the first English team to win at Metalist Kharkiv. Shola Ameobi, magnificent throughout, kept his cool from the penalty spot while Tim Krul was inspired in goal as United progress to the round of 16 in the Europa League.

90+2mins: Torsiglieri cuts inside and shoots but it's too close to Krul, who catches with ease. Surely United have done enough to reach the last 16 now.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons90mins: After taking what referee Gumienny deems to be too long to take the resulting free-kick, Krul is also booked. There will be five minutes of added time.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons88mins: Cristaldo is yellow carded for sliding in late on Krul as he went to try and force home after the keeper had spilled a cross. The goalkeeper requires treatment but is okay to continue.

SUB-MDC-iconsYellow-Card-MDC-icons87mins: Yohan Cabaye comes off for Gael Bigirimana and as the Frenchman jogs off, Fininho runs over to try and hurry him along - and is booked for his troubles.

86mins: Yet another top drawer save from Krul, this time from Willian who stole into the box eight yards from goal but was denied by a magnificent reaction save. If Newcastle progress, they owe a great deal to their goalkeeper.

85mins: There's still five minutes plus stoppage time to play but some Metalist fans are beginning to head for the exits.

SUB-MDC-icons82mins: Metalist make their final change as Sebastian Blanco replaces Edmar.

80mins: Now Perch is the hero as he blocks a shot from Jaja from point blank range. It was going in but the Newcastle man threw himself in the way of the ball.

77mins: Two great saves in the space of 30 seconds from Tim Krul, both to deny Cristaldo. First, Willian slid the striker in but Krul stood up tall to block. Then, as Metalist launched another attack, Cristaldo stuck out a leg to divert the ball towards goal but the keeper somehow pushed it away. Fantastic stuff from the Dutchman.

SUB-MDC-icons76mins: A double substitution for Newcastle - James Perch is on for Cisse and Jonas Gutierrez replaces Vurnon Anita as Alan Pardew looks to keep things tight.

74mins: Cisse is booked for dissent after the referee awarded Metalist a free-kick despite Ameobi being left on the ground.

71mins: Xavier tries his luck from distance once more but - not for the first time - he's off target as his effort swerves wide.

70mins: Willian races in from the right without being tracked and it takes a superb sprawling save from Tim Krul to deny him - how big could that prove to be in 20 minutes time?

SUB-MDC-icons67mins: Sosa drifts in at the far post to volley over as Willian and Jaja come on for Metalist in place of Juan Manuel Torres and Marlos respectively.

GOAL-MDC-icons63mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (0-1): He had to wait for nearly two full minutes to take it while the referee restored order and Sissoko was treated, but Shola Ameobi kept his cool to slot home a confident spot-kick. Now Kharkiv must score twice to go through - that's a massive goal. The players run over to the travelling fans in that corner, who are going wild.

PENALTY-MDC-icons62mins - Newcastle have a penalty! Sissoko siezed upon a mistake by the goalkeeper to race onto the ball and as he tried to take it round him, Goryaniov sent the Frenchman tumbling to the ground. The home fans aren't happy but United have a golden chance to take the lead.

61mins: Ameobi wins possession for his side and lays the ball off to Cabaye, who splits the Metalist defence with a slide-rule pass to Sissoko but he underhits his shot.

56mins: Marveaux works a clever one-two with Sissoko to open up a shot inside the box but from a rather narrow angle, the former blazes over the bar.

53mins: The first shot of the half is another over-ambitious free-kick from Xavier but like his effort in the first half, it goes well over. At the other end, Marveaux is similarly off target with a volley.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons46mins: Metalist get the second half started with no changes for either side.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons45+1mins: Referee Serge Gumienny's whistle blows to signal half-time and it's still goalless, just like it was in the first leg. It remains anybody's game - and anybody's tie.

45mins: There will be one minute of stoppage time at the end of the half.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons44mins: Massadio Haidara, who has enjoyed a solid debut so far, becomes the first player booked for a foul on Villagra.

43mins: Now, after more great work by Ameobi, Sissoko swings a cross in from the left and Cisse tries to head it back across goal. He fails, but the ball breaks and he almost manages to squeeze a shot past the keeper but instead stabs just wide.

42mins: Sissoko and Ameobi link up superbly to set up Papiss Cisse, whose first touch takes him into the area and his second is a shot which is parried by Goryaniov and then gathered at the second attempt. Some respite at least for Newcastle, but perhaps it should have been the first goal.

38mins: It's all Metalist at the moment and Newcastle breathe a sigh of relief as Sosa's dangerous corner is met by Cristaldo, who somehow heads wide at the near post with his second great opportunity of the night.

32mins: As Metalist begin to cause problems for the previously comfortable Newcastle backline, Jose Emesto Sosa, the home skipper, advances and lets fly but drags his shot wide.

28mins: So close to a Metalist opener - Cristian Villagra crosses from the right and Jonathan Cristaldo attacks it but sends his header just wide from ten yards out. Some of the home fans thought it was in but it wasn't and it stays 0-0.

26mins: Cabaye's left-wing free-kick is palmed away unconvincingly by Goryaniov as Ameobi attacked it but there still hasn't been a clear-cut chance at either end.

24mins: A Sylvain Marveaux corner is headed wide on the stretch by Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa as United continue to shade matters here in Kharkiv.

17mins: Danny Simpson does well down the right to beat a man and get in a low cross which, although, half-cleared, is retrieved by Ameobi. His shot from the edge of the box takes a deflection and trickles wide.

15mins: A magnificent pass from Yohan Cabaye is taken by Sissoko in his stride and the Frenchman gallops into box but can only send a weak shot from 15 yards straight at Olexandr Goryaniov, who had such a good night at St. James' Park seven days ago.

11mins: Cleiton Xavier sends a free-kick over the bar but it was always going to take something special to beat Tim Krul from 35 yards and that didn't fit the bill.

10mins: No chances yet but it's been a good start from Newcastle, who have succeeded in at least partially quietening this passionate home crowd.

2mins: Ameobi skins Marco Torsiglieri with a deft touch and toe-pokes a low cross towards Sissoko, who is just beaten to the ball by a Metalist defender to deny him a shot on goal from 12 yards.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons1mins: Using scarves, flags and PVC banners left on every seat before the game, the Metalist fans created a sea of yellow and blue as the teams emerged from the tunnel and now we're underway on an evening so cold that even the additional assistant referees behind each goal are wearing tights. It's the visitors who take kick-off through Shola Ameobi and Moussa Sissoko as both sides battle for a place in the last 16 of the Europa League.
