Madley In The Middle For Palace Cup Tie

Robert Madley will take charge of only his second ever United fixture on Wednesday in the Capital One Cup

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

Robert Madley will take charge of only his second ever Newcastle United fixture on Wednesday in the Capital One Cup.

The Magpies travel to Selhurst Park to take on Crystal Palace, and 28-year-old Madley will be the man in the middle of the third round tie.

The West Yorkshire-based official has only once previously refereed a United match - in October 2011, away at Blackburn Rovers in the same competition.

On that eventful night at Ewood Park, which ended in a 4-3 extra-time defeat, he booked five players including United trio Tim Krul, Fabricio Coloccini and Danny Guthrie.

In total this term, Madley has overseen three fixtures across the Premier League and Championship, issuing four yellow cards and one red.

Madley started refereeing in the Wakefield and District League in 2001 before progressing to the West Yorkshire Association Football League.

In 2010 he became a Football League official and in April 2013 took charge of his first Premier League fixture, between Southampton and West Bromwich Albion at St Mary's Stadium.

On Wednesday at Selhurst Park, Madley will be assisted by Andrew Garratt and Harry Lennard, with Graham Horwood the game's fourth official.
