Goalkeeper Karl Darlow made his second appearance since rejoining Nottingham Forest in their 1-0 win at Tranmere Rovers on Tuesday.
The 23-year-old, who was loaned straight back to the City Ground after signing for United last weekend, played the full 90 minutes for Stuart Pearce's side in their Capital One Cup victory.
It took a 12th-minute header from Michail Antonio to send Forest into the second round of the competition and, despite the sending-off of Michael Mancienne early in the second half, Darlow was tested only sporadically as the two-time European Cup winners progressed.
It was a second clean sheet for the stopper, following on from Saturday's 2-0 triumph over Blackpool in Championship action.
Another United loanee, Jamaal Lascelles, was not in Forest's matchday squad for the tie at Prenton Park, however, as he continues to recover from injury.
As Fleetwood Town got their inaugural League One campaign off to a flier with a 2-1 win over Crewe Alexandra last weekend, young forward Adam Campbell was an unused substitute for the Cod Army.
The youngest ever player to feature for the Magpies in European competition also spent time on loan at Carlisle United and St. Mirren last season. Former Newcastle midfielder Brad Inman netted Crewe's consolation at the Highbury Stadium.
Campbell did make it off the bench, however, in Fleetwood's 1-0 Capital One Cup defeat to newly-promoted Championship side Rotherham on Tuesday, entering the fray as a 65th-minute substitute for Matty Blair.
Graham Alexander's men travel to Notts County on Saturday, whilst Darlow and Lascelles could line up for Forest in their Championship game at Bolton this weekend.
