Adam Campbell scored on his St. Mirren debut but was unable to prevent his new side slipping to 2-1 defeat away at Kilmarnock on Thursday afternoon.
The teenage striker, who turned 19 on New Year's Day, fired the Buddies ahead just 12 minutes into his bow, swivelling in the box before finding the bottom corner with an impressive finish.
Campbell continued to threaten and went close on a number of occasions but Kilmarnock levelled just before the half-hour mark when Rory McKenzie fired home.
St. Mirren looked to be heading for a share of the spoils and a decent away point but, with time almost up, experienced front man Kris Boyd won it for the hosts.
Campbell completed the full 90 minutes at Rugby Park alongside fellow Magpies' loanee Conor Newton, who has been with the Saints since the summer.
Elsewhere over the New Year period, Newcastle's English-based loanees all ended up on the losing side in their respective games.
In the Championship, Dan Gosling's Blackpool suffered a 2-0 reversal at Sheffield Wednesday. Midfielder Gosling played the full match at Hillsborough but the Tangerines have now gone seven games without a win.
League One saw James Tavernier and Haris Vuckic both handed starts for Rotherham United.
However, Coventry came from behind, scoring three times in the final 20 minutes to run out 3-1 winners at the New York Stadium.
Tavernier played the full match while forward Vuckic was replaced midway through the second half.
In League Two, Michael Richardson's Accrington Stanley suffered a first defeat in four as they went down 3-1 at high-flying Fleetwood Town.
Richardson was involved throughout for Stanley but was unable to inspire his side to victory.
