Liverpool v Newcastle: Key Moments

Written by Newcastle Utd

The main moments from ten-man Newcastle's hard-earned draw against Liverpool which earned them a rare point at Anfield

By Dan King - Newcastle United Club Reporter

Liverpool 1 (Suarez 67)
Newcastle United 1 (Cabaye 43)

SECOND HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons 90+4mins: Ten-man Newcastle have hung on to gain a rare point at Anfield. They had to withdstand pressure in both halves but Yohan Cabaye gave them a lead eventually cancelled out by Luis Suarez. Fabricio Coloccin's red card meant the Magpies really had to hang in at the end but they did just that to draw the game.

Yellow-Card-MDC-icons 90+3mins: Santon is booked for tugging back Sterling, who was in full flight, and it's a clever foul from the defender although it almost backfires. The free-kick from Suarez is deflected and loops onto the bar before bouncing out of play.

90mins: Downing gets in a cross from the left which finds Shelvey in a great position but the midfielder's downward header is saved by Krul. The substitute has had three great opportunities to win this but he hasn't taken any of them. There will be four minutes of stoppage time and it really is all hands to the pump for the Magpies.

88mins: Santon is penalised for a foul on Gerrard, who takes the resulting free-kick from the right and the ball finds its way to Shelvey at the far post. The midfielder's shot is too close to Krul, though, who is able to hold on.

Red-Card-MDC-icons 84mins - RED CARD: Fabricio Coloccini is sent off for a foul on Suarez. At first glance, the Liverpool man - who has a reputation for going down easily - looked to have milked it for all it was worth but replays show that the Magpies captain was high and late in his tackle near the touchline and now United are a player down for the final six minutes plus stoppage time.

83mins: The lively Ameobi ghosts past Allen and gets a shot away which Jones can only parry, but there's nobody following in and Liverpool scramble the ball away.

82mins: Despite the best efforts of Ben Arfa, Enrique is able to cross from the left and his delivery looks perfect for Suarez, but he appears to take his eye off the ball for a split-second and fails to make any significant contact as the header drifts wide.

79mins: Sammy Ameobi leads the charge for Newcastle as they break quickly, and the sub has two men over to his right. He opts for Ben Arfa, who cuts into the box and shoots low but Jones is able to block. The Magpies are still throwing men forwards when they can.

77mins: A half-chance for Cisse, who pounces on a defensive error to shoot on the turn from just inside the box but sees his effort go narrowly wide of Jones' near post.

76mins: What a tackle from Steven Taylor. Liverpool looked certain to score as they attacked swiftly and Suarez played in Sterling, who shot from 12 yards only for the defender to appear from nowhere to slide in and block. Absolutely superb - how important could that prove to be?

SUB-MDC-icons 74mins: Sahin is off and Stewart Downing, the former Middlesbrough winger, is on in Liverpool's second change.

73mins: Chances at both ends - first, Ameobi is fouled and Ben Afra's 20-yard free-kick goes just wide, then Sterling's shot deflects off Taylor and drops over the bar with Krul looking worried.

70mins: It really should be 2-1 to Liverpool. Suarez is starting to cause Coloccini problems after the Argentine dominated the Uruguay ace in the first period and after bursting down the right-hand channel and delivering a low cross, Shelvey slides in and fails to get enough power to force the ball beyond Krul, who did well to keep it out. It was probably Shelvey's first touch and had he been on the pitch a bit longer he'd have expected to have put that away.

SUB-MDC-icons 68mins: Pardew chooses to make his substitution anyway - Ferguson is on in place of Cabaye and it seems to be pretty much a straight swap. The Northern Irishman is effectively playing the number ten role, but tasked with closing down the likes of Joe Allen.

GOAL-MDC-icons 67mins - LIVERPOOL GOAL (1-1): With Shane Ferguson preparing to come on, Enrique launches what looked to be an aimless ball upfield but it sails over the head of Coloccini and Suarez is able to round Krul before tapping into an empty net. Brendan Rodgers is trying to get Liverpool to play the ball on the ground more but that was route one - and very effective.

SUB-MDC-icons 66mins: Jonjo Shelvey replaces Suso in Liverpool's first substitution. Alan Pardew shakes the hand of the recently-capped England midfielder, who he managed at Charlton.

63mins: Even Ben Arfa is playing his part defensively as he heads Gerrard's cross away from Enrique inside the box. It's all Liverpool right now but Newcastle are doing their best to soak everything up.

61mins: A strong run from Ameobi is ended by a tackle from Martin Skrtel which ref Taylor deemed fair and that looked like the correct call. Liverpool break and Coloccini makes a good block from Gerrard's piledriver. More defending like that is going to be needed as the home side continue to charge forward.

59mins: Nuri Sahin is the latest Liverpool player to threaten as he gets in a shot from the same area that Suarez tested Krul from moments earlier. This time, no touch is required from the keeper but he may not have been getting there had it been on target - fortunately for United it dribbled just past the far post.

58mins: The home side are turning the screw without creating many chances - although Suarez has just forced Krul to palm an effort from the edge of the box behind. Until then, the Reds' final ball had let them down with Enrique the main offender, but for the second time this afternoon United will need to stand firm for a few minutes.

52mins: Anthony Taylor has refereed this game really well so far but Raheem Sterling is lucky to escape with just a talking to after a rash challenge which leaves Papiss Cisse in need of treatment from physio David Henderson. Fortunately the Magpies striker is able to return to the field with the help of Henderson's healing hands.

SUB-MDC-icons 50mins: United make their second change and this one sees Demba Ba replaced by Sammy Ameobi. The striker, who suffered a shin injury against West Brom last week, appears to be limping a little but Ameobi may give United a bit more of a defensive shape anyway as they try to preserve their lead. Ba hands Ben Arfa his gloves and Ameobi is also wearing some.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons 46mins: During the half-time break, a sprinkler went off facing the wrong way and totally soaked some of the home fans in the front row much to the Newcastle supporters' amusement. They're certainly the happier band as Liverpool get the second period started, attacking towards the Kop end.

FIRST HALF UPDATES

WHISTLE-MDC-icons 45+2mins: Liverpool make a right mess of dealing with a Magpies free-kick and Steven Taylor steals in to send a shot from 14 yards just wide. Referee Anthony Taylor's whistle goes and it's 1-0 to Newcastle at the break. So far it's been an almost faultless away performance from the men in black and white.

45mins: As Cabaye sends a long-range strike a foot or so over the bar, the board goes up to signal that there will be two minutes of stoppage time.

GOAL-MDC-icons 43mins - NEWCASTLE GOAL (0-1): When Newcastle last won at Anfield in 1994, Rob Lee scored the opening goal at the Kop end. Today, Yohan Cabaye has given the Magpies the lead at the same end - and what a goal it is too. Ben Arfa makes a brave, darting run down the right, ties Jose Enrique in knots and digs out a cross towards his compatriot at the far post. The midfielder is 12 yards out, at a tight angle, but wraps his foot around the ball to send a wonderful effort into the top corner. Alan Pardew would have been happy had his side gone in level at the break - as it stands, they're on course to do even better.

41mins: Suso hasn't seen too much of the ball on the right but looks threatening whenever he has, and as he dribbles inside and leaves Santon on the ground it takes a good block from the busy Yohan Cabaye to deflect his effort behind.

39mins: The Anfield crowd has been quietened by the display of Newcastle but the Kop choir do find their voices now as they try to rally their side and, from a free-kick just inside the Liverpool half, Gerrrard tries to lob Krul. The keeper backpedals but the ambitious shot drops over the bar anyway.

33mins: Captain Coloccini wins a superb header on the halfway line and Cisse plays the ball over the top for Ba, who is just beaten to the ball by Jones as the keeper races from his line. Having weathered the early Red storm, Newcastle are asking questions of their own now and it is a fairly open and even game.

28mins: Suarez sends a looping header wide after Gerrard had picked him out in the box with one of his raking passes, but Krul was able to take a watching brief as it drifted past his near post.

SUB-MDC-icons 27mins: James Perch picked up a knock a couple of minutes ago and has tried to play on, but it's game over for the ex-Nottingham Forest man as he limps off to be replaced by Danny Simpson. Anita goes into central midfield with Simpson - who wasn't even on the bench until a late change saw him replace Gael Bigirimana in the squad - slotting in at right-back.

23mins: Today's attendance is 44,803 with no empty red seats visible in this particular stadium.

21mins: Suarez jinks Peter Beardsley-style into the box and forces Krul to make an important block with his legs. The Magpies number one made a couple of big stops in the win over West Brom last week and he's just produced another one there to keep the scores level.

20mins: Ben Arfa sees a driven strike skim wide of Brad Jones' far post with the Australian keeper seemingly beaten as the Frenchman's shot almost took him by surprise. Four Newcastle players are wearing gloves but this game is really hotting up.

19mins: Suarez wins a free kick right on the edge of the box and his run is unfairly ended by a sliding tackle from James Perch, and the South American takes the shot himself, curling a couple of inches wide as he aimed for the top corner.

17mins: More good stuff from the visitors as Cabaye finds Santon with a great overlapping run and the Italian's cross towards Cisse sees the ball graze the head of the striker and run to Anita. His low cross from the right is cut out but Newcastle come again as Fabricio Coloccini embarks on a strong run upfield and is just crowded out on the edge of the area.

14mins: Lovely, patient approach work from Newcastle sees them work the ball from right to left, with Ben Arfa spreading play to Davide Santon who advances and tees up Ba for a strike. The Senegalese star is 22 yards out and his effort is too high but that was nice from Alan Pardew's side who may now be settling into this match.

10mins: Sterling, the exciting teenage winger for Liverpool, picks up the ball 30 yards from goal, runs with it and lets fly but his effort flies wide of Krul's goal without causing the Dutchman any undue concern. Still it's Brendan Rodgers' side who are in the ascendancy.

7mins: Luis Suarez turns and plays the ball out to Suso on the right, and the winger skips inside and sends a cross fizzing across goal after a touch from a Newcastle player. Gerrard takes the resulting corner and Krul palms it behind before Ba heads the next flag kick away. Newcastle need to withstand this early pressure from the hosts, who look really fired up.

3mins: Raheem Sterling wins a free-kick down the left after a push by Vurnon Anita and Tim Krul punches Gerrard's dangerous delivery clear. Newcastle are playing 4-3-3 here with Demba Ba the main striker and Papiss Cisse and Hatem Ben Arfa either side but it's the home side who have started on top.

WHISTLE-MDC-icons 1min: There are few grounds with quite the same aura as Anfield, the home of Liverpool FC, and after the traditional rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' this afternoon's match is underway with Newcastle kicking towards the famous Kop end in the first half. Both clubs are in their home kits and Steven Gerrrard is making his 600th appearance for the Reds. Newcastle haven't won here in more than 17 years - can they end that miserable run today?
