Goalkeeper Tim Krul has joined Ajax on loan, after signing a one-year contract extension at St. James' Park

Newcastle United goalkeeper Tim Krul has joined Ajax on loan until the end of the season, after signing a one-year contract extension at St. James' Park.

The 28-year-old has agreed to remain a Magpies player until the summer of 2018 but will spend the remainder of the 2016/17 campaign with the Dutch giants, as he continues his recovery from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, suffered last October.

Krul joined Newcastle from ADO Den Haag in the summer of 2005, aged 17, and made his first team debut in November 2006, putting in a man-of-the-match performance at Palermo in the UEFA Cup.

After loan spells at Falkirk and Carlisle United, the stopper eventually established himself as a key part of United's squad and was made first choice goalkeeper ahead of the 2011/12 season.

Eight-cap Netherlands international Krul has made 185 appearances in all competitions during his time on Tyneside.
