Krul Happy For Magpies To Go Under The Radar

Tim Krul believes United's new look team can spring a few surprises in the Barclays Premier League this season

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

Tim Krul believes Newcastle United's new look team can spring a few surprises in the Barclays Premier League this season, starting on Saturday at Swansea City (3pm kick-off).

The Magpies travel to the Liberty Stadium on the back of an encouraging opening weekend 2-2 draw against Southampton, in which debutants Georginio Wijnaldum, Chancel Mbemba and Aleksandar Mitrovic all showed plenty of promise for the campaign ahead.

Having only survived relegation on the final day of last term, goalkeeper Krul believes many pundits will have already written off United's chances of achieving anything in the 2015/16 season.

But, with some key summer signings on board and an attacking brand of football put in place by new head coach Steve McClaren, the Dutch international stopper insists the future is bright on Tyneside.

"This weekend at Swansea is going to be tough, really tough, but I have a good feeling about us this season," Krul told nufc.co.uk.

"Because of what happened last year, nobody is expecting anything. We will surprise a few people and it's great to be the underdogs.

"Let people talk about other teams and think we won't be anywhere - we know different.

"We have some tough games coming up, like Swansea and Manchester United away, but there have been some strange results already in the Premier League and we are confident that we can get results against anyone."

For the last week, Krul has been working under new United goalkeeping coach Simon Smith, following Andy Woodman's switch to Crystal Palace.

And the 27-year-old believes Smith, who held the same role under Sir Bobby Robson at St. James' Park, will help his career continue to progress.

"I had a great realtionship with Woody," continued Krul.

"He has been a close pal for the last five years and made me into the goalie I am today, so it was sad to see him go.

"But Simon is a great coach and someone I knew before he came here full-time. I worked with him a couple of times last season and he can definitely move me forward again."
