Krul And Co Secure Last 16 Place

Tim Krul and the Netherlands secured their place in the last 16 of the World Cup after coming from behind to beat Australia

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

Tim Krul and the Netherlands secured their place in the last 16 of the World Cup on Wednesday night, after coming from behind to beat Australia 3-2.

United goalkeeper Krul was an unused substitute for the second successive match as national boss Louis van Gaal kept faith with Ajax stopper Jasper Cillessen..

And Krul watched from the bench as Arjen Robben struck the Dutch into a 20th-minute lead with an angled drive.

However, Australia hit back immediately through one of the goals of the tournament - a stunning Tim Cahill volley which flew in off the bar - and they edged in front thanks to captain Mile Jedinak's penalty early in the second half.

Holland responded just before the hour mark with a fine Robin van Persie goal, before Memphis Depay's long-range strike flew in to seal all three points.

Krul and Co's final Group B fixture will see them take on Chile on Monday (5pm kick-off).
