Newcastle United's youngsters have been pipped to the Barclays Under-18 Premier League Tier Two title by Aston Villa.
Dave Watson's juniors started Thursday top of the table but the Villans' 6-1 win at Norwich in their final match saw them climb above the Magpies and win the league by a point.
That sets up a play-off clash with Sunderland on Saturday but is a disappointing blow for Newcastle, who had beaten the Canaries 6-0 last weekend.
United - who won the Premier Academy League Group D title last season before the league was revamped for the current campaign - will have to settle for a runners-up position this time around.
However, with many of the squad moving into the second year of their scholarships next term, they will be boosted by their displays in the second half of the season.
