John Alder And Liam Sweeney

Written by Newcastle Utd

Newcastle United will make a number of tributes to John Alder and Liam Sweeney on the first anniversary of their deaths

Friday, 17th July, marks the first anniversary of the passing of two of the Club's most loyal supporters, John Alder and Liam Sweeney, who tragically lost their lives on flight MH17 over Ukraine while travelling to watch their beloved Newcastle United in a pre-season tour of New Zealand.

John and Liam were among 298 passengers and crew who tragically lost their lives that day.

A year on, as the team conduct a similar pre-season tour of the US, the thoughts of everyone at the Club are with the families and friends of John and Liam.

In memory of both men, Club ambassador Bob Moncur will lay two wreaths in the Alder Sweeney Memorial Garden at St. James' Park on Friday, and the flags over the East Stand will fly at half-mast.

The team will also be remembering John and Liam with a minute's silence during their training session in Sacramento (pictured below) and will wear black armbands during their match against Sacramento Republic on Saturday evening in tribute.
