Lee Probert will take charge of Sunday's Tyne-Wear derby, as Newcastle United travel to local rivals Sunderland in the Barclays Premier League (1.30pm kick-off).
It is the first time this season the Wiltshire-based whistler has overseen a Magpies' match, although he officiated in a trio of United fixtures last term, with mixed results in the form of one win, one draw and a defeat.
So far during the 2013/14 campaign, the 41-year-old hs refereed eight games across the Premier League, Championship and Europa League, issuing 12 yellow cards, one red and awarding one penalty.
Probert began refereeing in 1986 in the local Bristol leagues, before working his way up the ladder and into the Football League in 2003.
He officially became a top-flight referee in the summer of 2007, but had already overseen his first Premier League fixture earlier that year as part of a trial.
On Sunday at the Stadium of Light, Probert will be assisted by Gary Beswick and Ron Ganfield, with Kevin Friend the game's fourth official.
