INTERNATIONALS: Double Defeat For African Duo

Written by Newcastle Utd

Papiss Cisse, Cheick Tiote and Freddie Woodman were all in international action on Wednesday

By Tom Easterby

Papiss Cisse was unable to inspire Senegal to victory over Tunisia on Wednesday night as they went down 1-0 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying tie.

The striker, aged 29, jetted off to his native country after firing four goals in three games for the Magpies but couldn't find the target before being replaced by former Newcastle front man Demba Ba late in the second half.

It followed a goalless draw against the same opponents on Friday.

Elsewhere in Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, United's midfield enforcer Cheick Tiote was in action during Ivory Coast's 4-3 defeat to Congo on Wednesday.

Twenty-eight-year-old Tiote saw his side go 3-1 down, but two goals from ex-Chelsea forward Salomon Kalou looked to have rescued a point for the Elephants until Jeremy Bokila's 89th-minute winner.

Finally, teenage Magpies goalkeeper Freddie Woodman played the full 90 minutes as England Under-19s saw off Belgium in their European Championship first qualifying round tie.

Woodman, who is currently on loan at League Two strugglers Hartlepool United, was beaten by Dion Cools and Obbi Oulare Mamadou at the Stade rue Henri Dunant in Luxembourg.

But strikes from Patrick Roberts, Brandon Barker and a brace from Bradley Fewster saw Sean O'Driscoll's Young Lions maintain their 100 per cent winning record as they bid to book their place at the tournament.
