Joan Edmundsson's Faroe Islands lose to Northern Ireland after ex-Magpie Aaron Hughes' first international goal
By Dan King - Newcastle United Communications Officer
A Newcastle United old boy got the better of one of the club's current players as Northern Ireland beat the Faroe Islands in a Euro 2012 qualifying match.
Captain Aaron Hughes, who graduated from The Magpies' Academy and went on to play more than 200 times for United between 1997 and 2005, scored the opening goal for the Ulstermen against Joan Edmundsson's Faroe Islands after just five minutes. It was his first for his country.
And while 20-year-old Edmundsson performed admirably as a lone attacker for his country, Northern Ireland ran out 4-0 winners at Windsor Park.
Edmundsson came close to scoring on 24 minutes with a good run and shot from just outside the box which was well saved by Lee Camp.
But the home side went 2-0 up midway through the second half thanks to a curling shot from Rangers midfielder Steven Davis, and Patrick McCourt added two wonderful goals to complete the scoring.
Edmundsson played the full 90 minutes while Christian Mouritsen, who arrived on trial at St. James' Park at the same time as him but didn't earn a contract, came on as a 75th minute substitute.
