Hong Kong Sevens Squad Named

Peter Beardsley has named his squad for the Hong Kong Football Club Citibank Soccer Sevens tournament

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

Peter Beardsley has named his ten-man squad as Newcastle United prepare to play in the Hong Kong Football Club Citibank Soccer Sevens tournament later this month.

Striker Alex Gilliead, midfielder Daniel Barlaser and defensive trio Macaulay Gillesphey (pictured), Callum Williams and Adam Laidler all played in last year's competition in the Far East, and are part of the Magpies' squad again.

And they will be joined by winger Callum Roberts, big front man Tom Heardman, goalkeeper Paul Woolston, full-back Jamie Sterry and midfielder Liam Smith for the competition, which takes place in the Happy Valley region between Friday, 29th and Sunday, 31st May .

Newcastle won the Cup on their tournament debut in 2012, lost to Leicester City in the 2013 final and suffered an agonising semi-final exit last year after giving up a two-goal lead against Kitchee.

"The players love the tournament," said Beardsley.

"They really embrace everything about it, enjoy the experience and it has done them a lot of good in their development.

"It's a great competition and as it gets further on, the crowds get bigger. When the final comes around it's an amazing experience and we would love to lift the cup again."

United are in Group A along with Leicester City and two local sides - BC Rangers and Singapore Cricket Club.
