Newcastle United's opening goal against Liverpool on Sunday has been officially credited as an own goal by Reds defender Martin Å krtel.

Georginio Wijnaldum's 69th-minute shot took a deflection off the Slovan stopper to put the Magpies 1-0 up in a game they went on to win 2-0.

Asked if he felt it was his strike, Wijnaldum told nufcTV: "Yeah, of course.

"I shot on goal and the ball took a deflection, but I still shot on goal, so I think it's my goal."

Newcastle supporters agreed - in a Twitter poll of 4,764 fans carried out by @NUFC, 61 per cent felt that the goal belonged to Wijnaldum.

But on Thursday, the Premier League's Goal Accreditation Panel ruled that the strike was a Å krtel own goal.

That means Wijnaldum has scored seven goals for the Magpies this season.

The panel also ruled that Leicester City's first and second goals against Swansea last weekend were scored by the Foxes' Riyad Mahrez.
