Gilliead Starts In England Win

Written by Newcastle Utd

Newcastle youngster Alex Gilliead started for England under-18s as they came from behind to beat Germany

Alex Gilliead helped England under-18s beat their Germany counterparts in an international friendly at Rotherham United's New York Stadium.

In front of an impressive crowd of 9,119, the Magpies teenager started in midfield for Neil Dewsnip's side on Wednesday night.

But it was two substitutes who inspired a strong comeback from the Young Lions, who fell behind to Patrick Pflucke's first-half goal.

First, Blackburn's Dean Rittenberg headed home an equaliser then Tottenham's Harry Winks - who replaced Gilliead in the 66th minute - beat Marius Funk to score what proved to be the winning goal.
