Gilliead Starts In England Loss

Written by Newcastle Utd

There was no early birthday present for Alex Gilliead as England lost to hosts Portugal in the second game of the Algarve Tournament

By Dan King - Newcastle United Club Reporter

The day before his 17th birthday on Monday, Alex Gilliead played for England under-17s in the Algarve Tournament against hosts Portugal.

But there was no early present for the Newcastle youngster as the Young Lions fell victim to a second half comeback to lose 2-1 at the Estádio Municipal Bela Vista in Parchal on Sunday.

Gilliead - an unused substitute in England's opening game against Germany which also ended in a 2-1 defeat - started against the Portuguese and was one of only five players to play the whole game.

Crystal Palace midfielder Reise Allassani had put John Peacock's side in front after just five minutes but after the break, Joao Lima headed home from a free-kick.

Then Marcio Martins won the game for Portugal. England - who won the tournament last year with United's Adam Campbell involved - take on Holland in their final group game on Tuesday.
