Gillespie Set For North East Return

Written by Newcastle Utd

Former fans' favourite is back in the region as he attempts to win a deal with neighbours Darlington

By Dan King

Former Newcastle favourite Keith Gillespie is set to once again pull on the black and white shirt of a North East club - after arriving on trial at Darlington.

The Northern Irish winger made 143 appearances for United between 1995 and 1998, helping the club finish as Premier League runners-up in two successive seasons and reach an FA Cup final, after arriving as part of the deal which took Andy Cole to Manchester United.

He was a key part of 'The Entertainers' side and provided countless goals for the likes Les Ferdinand, Alan Shearer and, memorably, Faustino Asprilla in the memorable 3-2 win over Barcelona in 1997.

After leaving St. James' Park, he went on to play for Blackburn, Leicester, Sheffield United and Bradford, plus loan spells at Wigan and Charlton.

Now, having left Irish Premier League side Glentoran in the summer, he has approached Blue Square Bet Premier promotion hopefuls Darlington and has been training with them this week.

He's expected to sign non-contract forms for them over the next few days and would compete with former Magpies youngster Chris Moore for The Quakers' right-wing position.
