Magpie Michael says he'll return fitter and stronger from knee injury

MICHAEL Owen says he is "fresh and hungry" to resume his Newcastle United career when he finally returns from a serious knee injury.

The Magpies' record signing has been missing all season after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament while representing England at the World Cup finals in Germany last summer.

Writing in The Times, Michael said: "People always ask of any player who has been out for a long time whether he will come back the same.

"My response is to say that I expect to be fitter and stronger.

"Assisted by some excellent people around me at Newcastle, I have used the rehabilitation period to strengthen all sorts of areas - and not just the injured knee."

Despite the long absence, Owen is keen to buildon an impressive return of seven goals in only ten starts for United.

He continued: "You always look for the positives and, after quite a relentless programme since I was 17, the break has given me a new drive to succeed.

"I am fresh and hungry to resume my career at Newcastle."
