Former Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi has joined Fleetwood Town until the end of the season.

Ameobi recently left Championship side Bolton Wanderers following the expiration of his contract at the Macron Stadium.

The 34-year-old Nigeria international departed St. James' Park in 2014 after scoring 79 times in 397 appearances over the course of 14 years.

He had a brief spell in Turkey with Gaziantep BB last season before reuniting with former Magpies boss Alan Pardew at Crystal Palace, but was released by the Eagles in the summer.

Ameobi - who became a patron of the Newcastle United Foundation last year - could make his Fleetwood debut against Port Vale on Saturday.

Fleetwood manager Steven Pressley told his club's official website: "He is not only a very good player; he is a terrific character that can bring a lot to the group.

"Shola has been involved at Bolton Wanderers on a regular basis for the vast majority of the season and he is raring to go ahead of Saturday's trip to Port Vale."
