Phil Dowd will referee Newcastle United's Barclays Premier League fixture at Burnley on Tuesday

By Anthony Marshall - Newcastle United Managing Editor

Phil Dowd will referee Newcastle United's Barclays Premier League fixture at Burnley on Tuesday night (7.45pm kick-off).

It is the first time the Staffordshire-based official has taken charge of a Magpies match this season, although in total this term Dowd has been appointed to 11 games across the Premier League, Championship and Captial One Cup, issuing 52 yellow cards and three reds, and awarding three penalties.

Dowd, aged 51, began refereeing in local leagues in 1984, and having worked his way up through the ranks, joined the Football League's full list of referees in 1997.

He was promoted to the Premier League list in 2001, and took charge of his first top flight match in December that year as Fulham took on Everton.

The highlights of Dowd's career to date have been being appointed to the 2010 League Cup final, the 2011 FA Community Shield and the 2012 FA Cup final.

On Tuesday at Turf Moor, Dowd's assistants will be Dave Bryan and Darren Cann, with Chris Foy the game's fourth official.
