Kieron Dyer's short-term contract with Middlesbrough will not be renewed, Boro boss Tony Mowbray has confirmed.
The former Newcastle midfielder headed to the Riverside at the end of January following his release from Queens Park Rangers, and the 34-year-old has scored twice in seven starts.
But Boro's form has nosedived spectacularly since the turn of the year and Mowbray is already planning for life without the ex-England man.
He is looking ahead to next season and therefore won't field Dyer or loanees Sammy Ameobi, Josh McEachran and Ishmael Miller in their final match of the campaign at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.
Ameobi is now back at Newcastle after scoring once in nine appearances for the Teessiders while on Dyer, Mowbray told Boro's official website: "I've spoken to Kieron and he won't be playing on Saturday.
"He's been a delight to work with. He scored two goals and I thought in his last home game he was the catalyst for us.
"Off the pitch he's been fantastic, entertaining the players, bringing quizzes on the coach for a five-hour trip and being a real good senior professional footballer for us.
"But I don't think we'll be continuing that into next season."
