Dummett Becomes Toma Fund Patron

Rising star Paul Dummett has agreed to become a patron for a children's cancer charity set up to remember one of his former Newcastle United Academy team-mates.

Toma Fund supports children, young people and their families from the North East and Cumbria who are living through treatment for childhood cancers.

Jordan Thompson played in the same United youth sides as Dummett until, aged 15, he lost his battle with Leukaemia in September 2007.

And Dummett, who agreed a new long-term contract with the Club last weekend, said: "I am honoured and delighted to be a patron of Toma Fund.

"Jordan and I were good friends when we both played at the Academy. His death from cancer was a real blow to all of us who knew him and I have watched the growth of Toma Fund over the last few years with delight.

"When Jordan's mam, Andrea, asked me if I would join Steven Taylor and another former Academy player, Mark Gillespie of Carlisle United, as a Toma Fund patron I was delighted and knew instantly that this was something I wanted to do.

"I hope that I will be able to use my name in a positive way to support this local charity that is doing so much to help make life a lot easier for local children, young people and their families who are going through treatment for childhood cancers."

Andrea Thompson, who founded the charity, said: "I am delighted that Paul has come on board as a patron for Toma Fund. We are a local charity helping local families who are supporting their child as they battle through treatment for cancer.

"Paul knew my late son Jordan very well and it's so lovely to see his footballing career take off. I am touched that he has chosen to support Toma Fund in this way and we are really looking forward to working with him in the future."
