FULL-TIME SUMMARY

NEWCASTLE United Under-18s needed extra-time to force their way into the Fourth Round of the FA Youth Cup as goals from Brad Inman and a Greg McDermott brace proved the difference between the sides at the Keepmoat Stadium.

It took just 30 seconds of the additional period for Australian-born Inman to find that elusive breakthrough, stealing in behind Rovers' high defensive line before controlling and poking underneath the on-rushing keeper with one swift, classy movement.

The scorer then turned provider for midfield accomplice McDermott to double the advantage as he charged onto his team-mate's neat pullback before dispatching with authority from the fringe of the penalty area on 103 minutes.

And McDermott added a third in front of watching first-team boss Chris Hughton as he stabbed home from close range at the death.

There had been few real openings for either side during the previously goalless 90 minutes, but United could have avoided extra-time had James Tavernier, unmarked on the edge of the six-yard area in the dying seconds, guided his header the right side of the upright having been picked out by Conor Newton.

Moments earlier lively substitute Ryan McGorrigan had rattled the Rovers crossbar with a dipping volley from the angle of the area and both Inman and Samuel Adjei saw long-range efforts saved by William Biggs during a second half in which United had finished much the stronger.

SECOND-HALF EXTRA-TIME (click refresh for latest)

Full-time, 3-0 United!

120min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (0-3): Greg McDermott bags his second of the night as he arrives inside the six-yard area to force home from Conor Newton's headed knockdown.

115min - Newton, McDermott and Inman are continuing to run their socks off in the middle of the park and it wouldn't surprise you if United found a third.

106min - Conor Newton stings the palms of Biggs with a vicious drive after McGorrigan had picked out his team-mate with a clever corner to the edge of the area.

We're off and running for the second period of extra-time. Liam Henderson has replaced namesake Jeff during the break.

FIRST-HALF EXTRA-TIME

103min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (0-2): Inman turns provider for midfield accomplice Greg McDermott as the Liverpool-born schemer charges on to his team-mate's neat pullback before dispatching with authority into the bottom corner from the fringe of the penalty area - great finish.

100 - The Magpies are very much in the ascendancy and win successive corners only for a tired Rovers to swipe clear on both occasions.

96min - United are teasing short passes around the park and look to be in control.

91min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (0-1): And within 30 seconds of the restart United find that breakthrough; Brad Inman stealing in behind the Rovers backline to latch on to James Tavernier's clip before controlling and poking under the on-rushing Biggs from six yards - super-cool finish from the Toon starlet!

SECOND-HALF UPDATES

And so that proves the case, we're going to need extra-time.

90+3min - That could be United's last chance to win this in normal time! Newton floats over from the right and Tavernier, having peeled off the shoulder of his marker, soars to head but merely succeeds in guiding a glancing effort wide of the base of the post.

90+1min - Jak Alnwick races from his line to claim at the feet of energetic substitute Adkins and gets a boot on the top of his head for his troubles - the brave stopper will be ok, though.

There will be four minutes for either side to find that elusive opener or we're heading to extra-time.

90min - Aaron Loxan, Rovers' livewire forward, is replaced by Nicholas Adkins.

87min - Kenny Wharton and Joe Joyce continue to encourage their troops from the sidelines - they know a winner could be just around the corner.

83min - Rovers are tiring fast here and Newton spots Adjei in space with an angled pass from deep. The Swede gathers and with one swift motion dispatches a 20-yard shot which is saved low by Biggs.

80min - Ryan McGorrigan, the Geordie substitute, comes within a lick of paint of breaking the deadlock as he confidently nods a hopeful punt downfield into his own path before rattling the crossbar with a dipping volley from the angle of the penalty area - what an effort, that deserved a goal!

76min - The visitors might just need a little bit of magic from the likes of Inman or Newton if they are going to unlock this Rovers backline.

75min - Stephen Folan stands strong to win another defensive header for United - the young Irishman has been impressive at the back tonight.

73min - The last five minutes or so has been all United - can they find a winner before the end of 90 minutes? If not we'll need extra-time and penalties to settle the tie.

69min - Inman takes aim from 25 yards but his right-footed drive deflects off two home shirts before zipping behind for a flag kick. McGorrigan drops high onto the head of skipper Henderson and, despite managing to return on target, the effort lacks the power to trouble keeper Biggs who plucks from the air.

67min - This second period has continued in much the same vein as the first and neither side has been able to take a stranglehold on the game.

66min - Rovers make their first change with Mathew Skirtland making way for Stephen Hoyle.

62min - James Tavernier's snap shot skirts the side-netting after Rovers had failed to clear from McGorrigan's low corner.

60min - Tempers are begining to flare and Inman receives a stern talking to from the man in black after an over-zealous challenge on midfield counterpart Blake.

57min - Aaron Moxam tricks his way by a series of yellow shirts before drilling low into the arms of a well-positioned Alnwick from 12 yards - that was a jinking little run from the Rovers forward and maybe deserved better.

56min - Ryan McGorrigan comes on for United with Dan Williams making way.

54min - Dummett is penalised, harshly, for a sliding challenge which sees Grayson tumble to the turf and Rovers have a free-kick 20 yards out. Stirland drills low into the wall and, after getting a second chance when the ball cannons back to his feet, drags a poor effort well wide.

50min - McDermott threads a ball the blind side of Nodder and Inman gives chase. The midfielder ignores the narrow angle to turn a shot on goal and, with the ball headed to the far corner, keeper Biggs stetches to palm clear - good effort.

46min - A half-time reshuffle sees James Tavernier switched to centre-forward with Dan Williams slotting in on the right wing.

The sides are back out and the rain continues to drift down as Rovers get us started - no further changes during the break.

FIRST-HALF UPDATES

And so sounds the half-time whistle to signal the end of the opening period. It's still goalless here at the Keepmoat with real chances at a premium for both sides. Stay logged on for all the second-half action.

There will be two minutes added time.

44min - There's a suspicion of a push on Folan inside the United penalty area but that infringement goes unnoticed and the ball rolls invitingly for Betts on the fringe of the box. The midfielder strikes first time and is unlucky to see a rising drive arrow up and over Alnwick's crossbar - good effort.

40min - Samuel Adjei glides in from the left but, with his right boot triggered for the shot, the Swede is chopped down by a sliding Towler 20 yards from goal. Dan Williams lines up the free-kick but skies high into the stand behind the goal.

35min - Mathew Stirland measures up a shot 25 yards out but fails to generate any real venom and Alnwick stoops to collect at ease.

33min - The slippery conditions are playing a big part here and both sides are struggling to maintain possession for any amount of time.

29min - United are going to make a first-half change with Greg McDermott replacing Andy Mogwo in midfield.

25min - Nzuzi hoists a ball in the direction of lone frontman Williams inside the area. The forward challenges and does enough to guide into the path of Tavernier, cutting in to support from the left. The Bradford-born star opts for the first-time shot but must be wishing he'd taken a touch as the ball lobs high and wide of the Rovers goal.

21min - An angled loft into the penalty area by Turner falls invitingly into the path of Moxam. The forward takes on his chest but is robbed of the chance to shoot by the pacey Folan who recovers to stab away to safety - great challenge by the Irish centre-back.

16min - Andy Mogwo enters the book as, after losing possession 25 yards from goal, he tugs to the ground opponent Moxam with the Rovers forward scurrying toward the United danger zone. Thompson fires the resultant free-kick through the wall but Alnwick watches all the way and saves.

13min - United fashion their first opening at the other end as James Tavernier slips in the forward running Inman, The midfielder has just William Biggs between him and an opener but the Vikings stopper does well to stay on his feet and shins wide Inman's attempt at a low, side-footed placer. Rovers win a free-kick from the corner.

10min - This time Alnwick is beaten by Bradley Grayson's 20-yard strike but the woodwork comes to United's rescue as the midfielder's rasper cannons off the post with the ball bouncing to safety.

8min - Some hesitant defending presents Aaron Moxam with an angle to shoot for the hosts and the centre-forward uses the greasy surface to skid a 20-yard effort towards Ben Alnwick's far corner. The Toon stopper looks beaten but does well to cover the ground and slides low to keep out with what were strong wrists - good save.

5min - James Tavrernier has actually started down the right flank with a midfield three of Inman, Newton and Mogwo, Samuel Adjei working the left wing.

3min - Chris Hughton and Colin Calderwood are both in the stands running the rule over United's starlets.

2min - It's been a fairly scrappy start with both sides still feeling each other out.

The rain is steadily sheeting down here at the Keepmoat as United get us started.
