Carroll Welcomes Carver Appointment

Written by Newcastle Utd

John Carver's appointment has gone down well with Andy Carroll, who knows the new assistant manager well

By Dan King

Top scorer Andy Carroll has spoken of his delight at the appointment of John Carver as Newcastle United's new assistant manager.

Eleven-goal Carroll, who is battling to be fit for Saturday's match with Spurs due to a thigh injury, was coached by Carver when he was a youngster at The Magpies' Academy.

Carver was the club's Academy Director when Carroll first joined the club's youth system and the number nine is looking forward to working with him again.

Speaking exclusively to nufc.co.uk, the goalscorer from Gateshead said: "It's good to see him back. I played under him at the Academy and he was a good coach then, so I'm really pleased that he's back.

"When I worked with him I was young, and that's when you learn the most. So I learnt a lot from him because I was still learning my trade. He was always very good with me and I'm grateful for the part he's played in where I am now.

"He's from round here and knows what the club is all about and, from a personal point of view, he knows what I'm all about. He's a great lad and I consider him a great friend, really."
