Campbell's Turkish Delight

Adam Campbell helped England beat Turkey as he made his under-19 debut for the Three Lions

By Dan King - Newcastle United Club Reporter

Adam Campbell made his debut for England under-19s in a 1-0 friendly win over Turkey on Thursday night.

Newcastle forward Campbell, who had previously represented his country at under-16 and under-17 level, was called into the squad for Noel Blake's Young Lions' final warm-up match ahead of May's Elite Qualifying Round for the European Championships.

He started on the bench at the New Bucks Head Stadium in Telford, but replaced Birmingham's Nathan Redmond after 55 minutes.

England had taken a 31st minute lead through Southampton's Calum Chambers and Manchester United's Nick Powell had a stoppage time penalty saved by visiting goalkeeper Onurcan Piri after the Magpies youngster's introduction.

It was a second debut of the month for Campbell, who made his Barclays Premier League bow against Stoke less than a fortnight ago.

Campbell, 18, will now hope to be part of the squad which travels to Belgium to take on the hosts, Scotland and Georgia for a place in the summer's European Under-19 Championships in Lithunia.

Elsewhere, January signing Kevin Mbabu played the whole game as the Swiss under-18 team beat Malta's under-19s 5-0 in a friendly on Thursday evening. On Tuesday, Mbabu had scored a late winner when the two sides met in the first of a double-header, with Switzerland triumphing 2-1.
