Armstrong At The Double For England

Written by Newcastle Utd

Adam Armstrong scored twice for England under-17s in Thursday's European Championships qualifier in Armenia

Newcastle youngster Adam Armstrong scored twice as England under-17s got their European Championships qualifying campaign off to the best possible start with a 4-0 win in Armenia.

After Fulham's Patrick Roberts gave John Peacock's Young Lions an early lead in Yerevan, Armstrong struck in the 31st minute.

The teenager - supported in Armenia by his dad, Steven - hasn't needed much in the way of assistance in finding the target this season as he netted five times in his opening five Barclays Under-21 Premier League matches this term.

But he was given a helping hand when a defensive clearance from the hosts hit him before dropping into the net.

After Armstrong had twice came close, Chelsea's Dominic Solanke added a third in the 75th minute before in stoppage time, Armstrong grabbed his second and England's fourth with a cool finish.

The Young Lions face Gibraltar on Saturday, then Republic of Ireland on Tuesday as they bid to reach the next round of qualifying for the Championships which will be held in Malta next May.
