Newcastle United pair Shola Ameobi and Cheick Tiote could be playing at next summer's World Cup after their respective nations qualified for the finals in Brazil.

However, neither player was involved in their decisive second-leg qualifying matches as Nigeria and the Ivory Coast progressed on Saturday.

Ameobi's Nigeria were 2-0 winners over Ethiopia in Calabar, thanks to goals from Liverpool loanee Victor Moses and Victor Obinna. It meant a 4-1 aggregate victory for the Super Eagles.

Joining them at the World Cup are the Ivory Coast, who recorded a 1-1 draw with Senegal to secure a 4-2 overall victory.

While Tiote sat out the fixture through suspension, United teammate Papiss Cisse started for opponents Senegal but was unable to inspire them to a memorable win.

Elsewhere, goalkeeper Tim Krul was an unused substitute as Holland threw away a two-goal lead to draw with Japan in friendly action in Genk.
