Alex Left Feeling Green Around The Gills

Written by Newcastle Utd

Newcastle's Alex Gilliead won his seventh England under-17 cap against Russia but was on the losing side in Euro qualifier

By Dan King - Newcastle United Club Reporter

Alex Gilliead won his seventh cap for England under-17s on Monday evening but it was to be no lucky number seven as the Young Lions were beaten by Russia.

Having appeared as a second-half substitute in Saturday's 1-0 win over Portugal, the Newcastle youngster again came from the bench at the Pirelli Stadium.

He was a 62nd minute replacement for Chelsea's Alex Kiwomya but England were already 2-1 down. They've taken the lead after six minutes through a Nikita Chernov own goal but equalised through a stunning Ayaz Guliev strike on the half hour mark.

And another impressive effort in the 51st minute, this time from Ramil Sheidaev, turned the game on its head and meant England must now beat Slovenia on Wednesday to stand a chance of qualifying for this year's European Under-17 Championship finals.

Magpies goalkeeper Freddie Woodman was an unused substitute.
