Andre Marriner will referee Newcastle's game against Liverpool on Saturday - his fifth Magpies match of the campaign

By Dan King - Newcastle United Club Reporter

Andre Marriner will referee Newcastle United's Barclays Premier League fixture at home to Liverpool on Saturday.

It will be the fifth time this season that the West Midlands-based official has overseen a Magpies match - four of them at St. James' Park.

He has already been the man in the middle for the 2-2 draw at Reading in September, the 3-1 home defeat against Manchester City before Christmas, the 2-1 home loss to Reading in January and last month's 2-1 win over Stoke.

In total this term, Marriner has taken charge of 34 games across the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup, Capital One Cup and Championship, issuing 103 yellow cards and sending off five players.

The 42-year-old began refereeing in 1992 when he was asked to stand-in for an official who did not turn up at a local league match, and he progressed through the ranks to become a Football League referee 11 years later.

Marriner's first Premier League appointment came in November 2004 with a 4-0 victory for Charlton Athletic over Norwich City, and he took charge of the 2010 Championship play-off final between Blackpool and Cardiff City at Wembley.

On Saturday, Marriner will be assisted by Stephen Child and Simon Long, with Lee Mason the game's fourth official.
