Newcastle United Under-23s suffered a heavy 5-0 defeat against their Southampton counterparts in the Premier League 2 on Friday afternoon.

United's second-string conceded twice in the opening 45 minutes following Kazeem Olaigbe's opener at the Saints' Staplewood Training Ground before the attacking winger doubled his and Southampton's tally before the half-time whistle.

Two goals in six second-half minutes, courtesy of Dynel Simeu and Thierry Small, saw the young Magpies fall further behind before Lewis Payne's strike confirmed a forgettable afternoon for Newcastle's youngsters.

Elliott Dickman made three changes to the side which claimed a 2-2 draw against their Norwich City counterparts last week, with teenage duo Elliot Anderson and Joe White returning from injury and suspension respectively while 21-year-old winger Adam Wilson was also named in the starting eleven.

In a repeat of the 2018/19 Premier League 2 Division Two play-off final, with the young Magpies suffering a 2-1 defeat at St Mary's Stadium, Southampton broke the deadlock through Olaigbe as Will Smallbone's neat cutback found the attacking winger, who slotted the ball past United goalkeeper Dan Langley.

In the 39th minute, United's youngsters were dealt a further blow as Olaigbe netted his and the Saints' second of the afternoon, firing a low finish into the net.

The young Magpies fell further behind in the 61st minute as Dynel Simeu notched Southampton's third, emerging from a crowded penalty area before slotting the ball home.

Six minutes, Newcastle trailed by four as full-back Thierry Small got his name on the scoresheet after his well-taken finish found the back of the net.

In the closing stages of the Division Two clash, United's second-string conceded a fifth through Lewis Payne's finish to round off a miserable trip to the South coast for the young Magpies.

Newcastle United Under-23s turn their attention to Papa John's Trophy action on Tuesday, 9th November when they travel to the One Call Stadium to take on League Two Mansfield Town in the young Magpies' final Northern Group H clash (kick-off 7.45pm GMT).
