Newcastle's second-string drew 0-0 with their Liverpool counterparts at the Reds' Kirkby Academy on Sunday afternoon.

The game was played behind closed doors with neither side able to find a way through, with United forward Tom Allan clipping the woodwork and substitute Dylan Stephenson hitting the post in the young Magpies' final pre-season outing of the summer.

Sixteen-year-old goalkeeper Max Thompson, who was named on the first-team bench for Newcastle's pre-season fixtures against York City and Doncaster Rovers, produced a string of smart saves for the visitors to maintain a deserved clean sheet.

United's second-string aimed to end their pre-season campaign in strong fashion after suffering respective defeats against North east neighbours Gateshead and Blyth Spartans.

Chris Hogg handed starts to defender Remi Savage and midfielder Niall Brookwell, both of whom progressed through Liverpool's youth ranks before joining Newcastle, while Tom Allan, Jack Young, Joe White and Matt Bondswell, who all made their Magpies first-team debuts last month, were also named in the starting line-up.

The visitors went agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock in the first-half as Young's teasing free-kick found Allan inside the box but the forward's first-time flick towards goal struck the top of the crossbar.

In the second-half, Newcastle continued their push for a breakthrough as Allan went close once again. After neat build-up play from White and right-back Ryan Barrett, the latter flicked the ball into the striker's path but the Ashington-born 21-year-old fired his shot wide of the front post.

Rodrigo Vilca, who joined the Magpies from Deportivo Municipal in October 2020, then linked up impressively with Allan on the left flank before picking the ball up on the edge of the box but, after advancing dangerously into the penalty area, saw his strike flash wide of the target.

United's youngsters then struck the woodwork for a second time, this time through Stephenson. After Savage smartly dispossessed a Liverpool attacker, the composed centre-back threaded a delightful pass into Stephenson's path but the 18-year-old's sliding effort clipped the frame, denying the Blyth-born forward a fourth goal in five pre-season outings this term.

Newcastle United Under-23s begin their Premier League 2 campaign on Monday, 16th August at home to Reading. The Division Two clash will take place at Whitley Park, with kick-off at 7pm (BST).
