Newcastle United Under-21s were knocked out of the Papa John's Trophy with a game to spare following a 2-0 defeat against Harrogate Town on Tuesday night.

Newcastle's second-string conceded inside six minutes following Lloyd Kelly's opener for the League Two outfit before Danilo Orsi's strike on the stroke of half-time doubled the hosts' advantage at the EnviroVent Stadium.

After losing their opening Northern Group H clash at Sheffield Wednesday, the young Magpies travel to Mansfield Town next month knowing they can no longer qualify for the competition's knockout stages.

There were three changes made from the side which inflicted a 4-1 victory against their Middlesbrough counterparts on Friday night as experienced goalkeeper Mark Gillespie started in between the sticks, making his first competitive appearance since September 2020, while defender Brad Cross and midfielder Niall Brookwell were also handed starts.

In unpleasant weather conditions, the visitors got off to a difficult start in their Northern Group H encounter as the Sulphurites broke the deadlock in the sixth minute through Kelly's clinical finish.

After Gillespie's pass was intercepted by Jack Muldoon, the forward adjusted his feet before flicking the ball into Kerry's path, who drilled a low effort into the bottom left-hand corner.

Newcastle went in search of a much-needed equaliser as Josh Scott, who signed his first professional contract with his boyhood club in July, fired an inviting cross into the penalty area following neat work from Elliot Anderson but the ball flew across the face of goal.

Cross, a representative of South Africa at under-20 level, then produced a crucial last-ditch block as the United left-back turned away George Thomson's fierce goal bound shot away for a corner.

Anderson produced Newcastle's best goalscoring opportunity of the opening 45 minutes as the England under-19 international, who made his Premier League debut for the Magpies in January, let fly from distance but the teenager's venomous effort flew narrowly over the crossbar.

In the 45th minute, Newcastle were dealt a disappointing blow as Danilo Orsi doubled Town's lead before the half-time whistle.

After Muldoon dangerously advanced forward before sliding the ball into the striker's path, the 25-year-old fired his effort into the top right-hand corner.

In the second-half, Gillespie prevented Harrogate from extending their lead with a double save as the Newcastle-born goalkeeper reacted quickly to turn away Will Smith's header following a teasing corner from the right flank before blocking the rebound.

Jack Diamond then tested Gillespie with a fizzing effort which looked to be creeping towards the left-hand corner but the 29-year-old 'keeper was alert to importantly beat the ball away from danger.

Adam Wilson was introduced in the latter stages of the contest and almost made an immediate impact from the substitutes' bench as the 21-year-old swivelled inside the box before his low strike was held by Harrogate shot-stopper Joe Cracknell.

Jay Turner-Cooke, another second-half introduction for Newcastle's second-string, went close to setting up a nervy finale as the 17-year-old pounced on a defensive error but was unable to convert, curling the ball over the crossbar.

Newcastle United Under-21s: Mark Gillespie, Joe Oliver, Charlie Wiggett, Remi Savage, Brad Cross, Niall Brookwell (Lucas De Bolle 79), Jack Young, Joe White (Jay Turner-Cooke 46), Josh Scott, Elliot Anderson (c), Dylan Stephenson (Adam Wilson 78).

Subs not used: Piotr Banda, Ryan Barrett, Rosaire Longelo, Stan Flaherty.
