Newcastle United Under-23s were beaten 4-1 against National League North outfit Gateshead in their latest pre-season fixture on Saturday afternoon.

The young Magpies fell behind in the opening stages through former United forward Adam Campbell before Greg Olley, who also began his career at Newcastle's Academy, doubled the Heed's advantage.

Chris Hogg's side halved the deficit shortly after the restart through Dylan Stephenson's neat finish before the Heed extended their lead through strikes from Cedwyn Scott and substitute Paul Blackett.

Following a 3-1 win at Darlington last week, United's second-string headed into the friendly contest and faced a Gateshead side containing former Magpies defender Mike Williamson, who spent six years on Tyneside, as well as former Academy players Owen Bailey, Jack Hunter and Louis Storey.

After an even opening, the visitors trailed inside 12 minutes at the Gateshead International Stadium courtesy of Campbell's clinical finish.

As Charlie Wiggett, who joined the Magpies from Chelsea in June, was dispossessed on the edge of his own penalty area by Olley, the Durham-born forward found Campbell who drilled a fierce, low effort into the bottom right-hand corner.

In the 28th minute, Gateshead extended their lead as Olley turned from provider to goalscorer, racing onto Cedwyn Scott's through ball, calmly rounding United goalkeeper Will Brown and slotting the ball home despite Wiggett's attempt to clear off the line.

Newcastle had the ball in the net shortly before the half-time whistle as Stephenson got onto the end of Adam Wilson's teasing cross into the box but the goal was disallowed as the Blyth-born forward, who netted a brace against Darlington, had strayed into an offside position.

However, in the 48th minute, Stephenson would not be denied a second time as the teenage striker got his name on the scoresheet, controlling Stan Flaherty's pass before firing a low, powerful strike past Heed keeper Jacob Chapman into the far right-hand corner.

Gateshead regain their two-goal cushion three minutes later as Scott, a trialist for United's second-string last term, sprinted onto Olley's through ball before calmly placing the ball past 16-year-old goalkeeper Max Thompson.

In the 64th minute, the Tynesiders grabbed their fourth goal of the afternoon as Blackett made an instant impact from the bench, racing in behind the United defence before netting with his first touch.

The young Magpies face an away trip to Blyth Spartans on Tuesday evening (kick-off 7.30pm BST) in their next pre-season friendly.
