Newcastle United Under-23s missed out on moving into the Premier League 2 play-off spots following a 5-1 defeat against their Burnley counterparts on Friday night.

Jay Turner-Cooke's impressive first-half finish, the teenager's tenth goal of the season at under-23 level, broke the deadlock for the young Magpies at the Lancashire FA County Ground after Newcastle goalkeeper Max Thompson had also saved Rob Harker's penalty.

However, Ben Woods' second-half brace sent the Clarets into the lead and after goals from Harker and Max Thompson extended the hosts' advantage, Woods completed his hat-trick with a penalty in the closing stages, condemning United's youngsters to a heavy defeat in Leyland.

Elliott Dickman made three changes to the starting line-up which suffered a 4-2 defeat against their Middlesbrough counterparts as goalkeeper Thompson - who has represented England at under-18 level - replaced Jake Turner in-between the sticks while Josh Scott and Charlie Wiggett were also handed starts.

Newcastle's second-string were aiming to move into the play-off spots with a victory against their Clarets counterparts, who were six points adrift of the young Magpies.

After an even opening to the contest, Newcastle conceded a penalty after Harker latched onto a lofted pass behind the United defence before the striker was tripped by captain Niall Brookwell.

Harker's spot-kick, however, was saved by Thompson, who guessed the correct way before getting down quickly to hold the forward's attempt from 12 yards.

In the 29th minute, Newcastle opened the scoring through Turner-Cooke's splendid finish. The attacking midfielder, who joined the Magpies' youth set-up from Sunderland in January 2021, picked up the ball on the edge of the penalty area before rifling a fierce effort beyond Burnley goalkeeper Sam Waller.

Newcastle were fortunate to head into the break with a slender advantage as Burnley's Max Thompson blazed his close-range effort after Ne-Jai Tucker had advanced along the byline.

In the 57th minute, Burnley drew level through Woods' clinical volley. After the ball was headed out of the box, the ball fell to the midfielder, who let fly with a stinging volley into the far right-hand corner.

In the 65th minute, Newcastle suffered another significant blow as Wood doubled his and Burnley's tally, curling a long range free-kick into the right-hand corner.

In the 75th minute, United's second-string fell further behind as Harker raced onto a through ball before lifting the ball over the rushing Thompson.

Burnley all but confirmed three points in the 86th minute as Thompson, fed through on goal, calmly slotted the ball home with a neat finish.

With the full-time whistle approaching, Burnley added a fifth as Woods completed his treble from 12 yards. After Harker raced in-behind the United defence, the striker was brought down by Thompson after rounding the goalkeeper, leaving Woods to dispatch the spot-kick into the right-hand corner.
