Newcastle United's second-string ended their pre-season campaign in strong fashion following a 2-0 victory against Rotherham United.

Rosaire Longelo's late strike and Oisín McEntee's powerful drive secured the victory at the Roundwood Sports Complex against an experienced Rotherham side.

Neil Redfearn, taking charge of his first game as Newcastle United under-23s head coach, handed starts to Elias Sørensen, Tom Allan, Kell Watts and Owen Bailey - all of whom made their first-team debuts during Newcastle's Premier League Asia Trophy campaign in China.

Longelo broke the deadlock in the 83rd minute. Kyle Scott, making his debut for Newcastle after joining from Chelsea, saw his low drive blocked by a group of Rotherham defenders before Longelo latched onto the rebound and sent a strong strike into top left corner.

United doubled their lead in the final minute as McEntee, an under-19 international for Republic of Ireland, fired a powerful strike beyond the Rotherham goalkeeper.

Newcastle United Under-23s: Nathan Harker, Ryan Barrett (Jude Swailes 65), Lewis Cass, Oisín McEntee, Kell Watts, Oliver Walters (Adam Wilson 60), Mo Sangare, Owen Bailey, Jack Young (Kyle Scott 60), Tom Allan (Rosaire Longelo 46), Elias Sørensen (Victor Fernández 46).
