Newcastle United Under-23s 3-2 Norwich City Under-23s
- Joseph Johnson
Newcastle United Under-23s secured their first home win of the season after a 3-2 triumph against Norwich City in Premier League 2.
Two first half strikes, courtesy of Rosaire Longelo and Luke Charman gave United's youngsters a healthy advantage before Dan Adshead halved the deficit in the final minute of the first half.
Norwich's Isak Thorvasldsson levelled the scoreline in the second half before Tom Allan's powerful low strike secured maximum points and back-to-back victories in Premier League 2.
With Steve Bruce in attendance at Whitley Park, Newcastle's nearly took an early lead in front of Newcastle's head coach after a neat passing move was almost completed by winger Tom Allan but the teenager's strike at goal was crucially blocked by defender Ciaren Jones.
United continued pushing for an opening goal as Norwich goalkeeper Archie Mair was forced into pushing Charman's fierce strike away from goal before cleverly tipping Longelo's rebound over his own crossbar.
However, in the 35th minute, Newcastle took the lead in tremendous fashion as Longelo, situated outside of the penalty area, curled an excellent strike into the top corner.
Newcastle doubled their advantage six minutes later as Charman collected the ball inside Norwich's own half before driving past Jones before sending a low effort into the net via the far post.
Despite United's attacking dominance, Neil Redfearn's side were dealt a blow as Adshead drilled a low effort past Dan Langley, making his full competitive debut for Newcastle's second-string.
In the second half, United were unfortunate not to regain their two-goal lead as a fine through ball from Charman was unselfishly cut back by Allan into the path of Yannick Touré, but the forward's first time shot was timely blocked by Andrew Omobamidele before the ball trickled past the post.
In the 65th minute, Norwich levelled the clash as Tom Scully's in-swinging corner found Thorvasldsson at the back post before the Canaries captain smashed the ball into the roof of the net.
In the 73rd minute, United restored their lead as Allan netted his second league goal in consecutive games, cleverly controlling a fine searching diagonal pass from Jamie Sterry before drilling the ball home.
Newcastle almost added a fourth in the closing stages as Bailey diverted his header from Longelo's teasing corner into the six-yard area, with the ball requiring to be cleared over the Norwich crossbar.
Langley was forced into stopping Fitzpatrick''s long range strike, with the 18-year-old getting down quickly to hold the midfielder's effort and maintain maximum points for United's youngsters.
